The stress causes a heart attack for the owner of the hardcore rap record label Felony Assault (played by director Benjamin). It's up to his stylishly sunny daughter Marci (Lisa Kudrow) to take over his business. She tries to rescue the record label by changing the negative image of Dr. S. in order to appeal to a youth-oriented crowd, which leads the pair into an unlikely romance. Actress Christine Baranski appears as a conservative senator who threatens to ban the rapper. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Quite literally has one laugh and not a clue about its targets.
  • June 2, 2008
I saw this because it had Lisa Kudrow and actually thought it was pretty funny.

Fish-out-of-water movies where they put awkward white people in gangsta or hip-hop settings are a dime a dozen, just like this unfunny mess.

An oddly horrible film. It had no reason, it was a satire of nothing. No cultural significance what so ever.

I didnt think it was possible that I could hate Lisa Kudrow more than I hated her as Phoebe on that shitty show FRIENDS. Well, it IS possible! I found out when I watched the terribly unfunny MARCI X. Not only was MARCI X terrible, Lisa Kudrow was too damn old for the role!

It's no masterpiece, but I found it consistently good-hearted and sometimes hilarious, and the sparse crowd I saw it with was laughing as much as I was, especially at the outrageous rap numbers. Full Review

If the context of Marci X were more realistic, a lot of these gags would soar. But the context is drag-show dinner theater. Full Review

A talent-stuffed assemblage of barbs and giddy musical numbers that shouldn't be written off as a feature flop -- but savored instead for the cult-ready collection of late-night satirical skits and mi... Full Review

The term 'wildly uneven' doesn't come close to charting the peaks and valleys of Marci X. Full Review

The spoofs in Marci X are so old and dated, it boggles the imagination to think of what group might still be offended them. Full Review

Marci X plays like a satire made by people who don't know the worlds they're satirizing. Full Review

If this had been released in, say, 1994 at the latest, it might have been cutting-edge. As it is, it's just so much sticky foam on the cappuccino. Full Review

This is the kind of movie that would leave a hopeful crowd feeling let down, but might sparkle like a tiara in a trash can for someone who discovers it by chance. Full Review
