He finally decides to take the plunge on his last goal, a decision that makes parents Gino (Paul Sorvino) and Maria (Ginette Reno) none too happy; they're not about to let one of their offspring leave the house without getting married. What they don't know is that Angelo is gay, a secret he's been keeping from everyone but his understanding older sister Anna (Claudia Ferri). A greater shock yet to the family is that Angelo is moving in with longtime crush Nino (Peter Miller), a local policeman whose sexuality is at odds with his macho profession. As the two lovebirds struggle to make sense of their relationship, both of their families chime in with opinions both helpful and not-so-helpful as they struggle to come to terms with their sons' new lives. Shot and set in Montreal, Mambo Italiano premiered stateside at the 2003 New York Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

Mambo Italiano is the story of an Italian immigrant coming out to his old school Italian family. There are some really hysterical lines in this movie, but in general I found the whole thing to have been done. Putting an Italian twist on it, was in theory a good idea, but the whol... read moree film just comes across as cliché. The gay stereotypes are outdated and the other F word is thrown around way too much. If you're looking for an original "gay" comedy, watch Sascha Baron Cohen's Bruno, that was a great movie. Mambo Italiano is just a fast moving, sexist nightmare, with the occasional great one liner.

    Just sort of sappy

I was hoping Nino would get back with Angelo, but he didn't deserve him after ignoring him all through high school and being ashamed of him as his lover. Angelo's family was very funny.

I need to see the beginning of this, because I've seen the last half at least 3 times. I assure you Luke Kirby is even more adorable without that curly hair (see: Slings & Arrows Season 1). I like the realistic ending.

I love it.. I am a German Italian Hungarian.. who grew up with the Italian side of the family.. (it's odd being the blonde haired blue eyed Deutsche maedchen in a family of dark haired dark skinned people.. ) Luckily my parents where the children of immigrants, so the pull is... read moren't QUITE as strong.. but, I remember the family get togethers every week.. I still deal with the guilt from my grandmother.. (and I live in another state!) I also remember coming out in this family.. and it was.. .hmm.. interesting is too light a word. This one was fun.. I think this one is going to be one that I buy as soon as I can get the money.. It reminds me of the past, while completly making me laugh at some of the absurdities..

This movie is so funny. Before I watched this did not know that Montreal was the fake Canada and Toronto was the real one lol. Just watch it and you will get the last sentence

In some ways, this family reminded me of my family. One of the characters states that her Italian family is one that runs on "serene chaos." I understand exactly what she means. I loved the guy in the movie (who comes out to his family, against the wishes of his boyfriend). Th... read moreis is just a fun and energetic movie, with lots of laughs and some tears!

There are laughs in the movie, and a lot of good feeling, but it seems more interested in its Italian stereotypes than its gay insights, and it must be said there is absolutely no feeling that Angelo ... Full Review

Lacks that outrageous effrontery that might have socked it to its intended audience.

Mambo Italiano is likely to provoke the same urges in the movie house that poor Nino experiences after a dinner at the noisy Barberini compound -- an overwhelming desire to flee.

Mambo Italiano is no sophisticated dance, but it moves about with an open heart. And hey, it's at least as funny as that Greek thing. Full Review

The movie seems more interested in splashing stereotypes all over the screen than in uncovering any kind of truth, comic or otherwise.
