Dated but well intentioned and at the time ground breaking drama. The male leads are good but best of all is Kate Jackson, its a shame she didn't make it in features. Wendy Hiller offers a lovely performance in a small role.

This movie addresses a very real problem for many closeted gay men and their families - it was well done and seemes very progressive for when it was made.

the first same sex movie and what a bore, no wonder it took 20 more years for gays to come out of the cinema closet

One of the first gay movies I ever saw on TV. Remember how I stayed up late with the sound down low so my parents wouldn't hear lol. Well acted from what I can remember.

Well, this came on later at night/early morning. As a gay man, most would think I would love movies about gay characters, but I'm really picky when it comes to gay-oriented films. This flick has an amazing storyline that really transcends the typical revelation that takes place h... read moreere. In my opinion, what makes this film work is the focus on Zack's emotions and the marriage. Very few movies make me cry - this flick, however, had me crying a river. There really is so much love demonstrated between Claire and Zack - I truly felt their pain.

Very good film about a topic that was considered taboo when the film came out. A real piece of groundbreaking cinema.
  • March 16, 2007
Populated with intelligent, sympathetic, even kind of saintly characters stuck in a lame old mess. Gleams with 80s cheese, but the aesthetic serves the sincere melodrama well.
  • July 22, 2006
One of the first "mainstream" films that deals with a man's coming to realize his true sexual orientation. Unlike Brokeback Mountain, this has a "Hollywood ending" in that most characters live "happily ever after." Thanks to Flixter (Hannah) for adding this ground breaking film w... read moreithin 1 day of my request!

Unfortunately, Hiller doesn't command the intensity of feeling that might have made it emotionally valid, and he doesn't have the awareness of the cultural forces at work in his film that might have m... Full Review

On its own baby-step terms, and despite its moneyed vanilla-himbo vision of gay masculinity and desire, Making Love plays now as a bemusing anachronism but not an insulting or self-inflating one. Full Review
