An Australian couple sets off on a weekend to the coast in this psychological thriller. Peter (John Hargreaves) and Marcia (Briony Behets) are at each other's throats from the moment they pull out of ... read more read more...the driveway, as Peter sneaks his dog along for the weekend and Marcia is harboring anger about a recent tragedy the couple faced. As day turns into night and they have yet to reach their destination, Peter hits a kangaroo while falling asleep at the wheel. This sets in motion a chain of mysterious events, which starts with them leaving the beaten path and appearing to go in circles through the darkened thickets of trees -- even though they've driven straight ahead for hours. Upon eventually reaching their destination, the strange happenings continue, with animals behaving in unusual ways, and a persistent cry of anguish floating over the water, which sounds almost human. Peter and Marcia are determined to prove they can rough it, even as they start to wonder if they've gotten in over their head. They doggedly remain camped, despite mounting evidence that they don't understand the feral Australian woods as well as they think. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi

One of my favourite horror films. Very original and very frightening, this one will stay with you for a while after watching. Mother nature kicks ass!

Great movie. A Character driven suspense piece. This is not a horror movie (although its been sold as one), it is neither gory nor does it rely on cheep shocks (it does employ them however)

A weird and bizarre film as a couples weekend goes from bad to worse. Well worth a look. Actually made in 1978 from what I remember. It's very different and creepy!

A film that surprised me. This was an excellent suspense thriller/horror that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Both of the leads are excellent but Mother Nature is the 3rd character and she scared the hell out of me. Of course, everything that happens in the film could ... read morebe down to chance but it depends how you want to view it. Personally I think the supernatural overtones dominate and it's a great ride watching nature take its revenge.

MIFF '08: And so begins my favourite time of year - MIFF month! To kick off the festival, I saw Long Weekend - an Australian thriller from the 70s about nature gone berserk. Think 'The Birds' or maybe even 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'. What was cool about this movie was that it was a... read morebout two people who have a total disregard for nature...and so, nature lashes back with brutal vengeance! Delicious! It wasn't scary, but it was definitely suspenseful - particularly when Peter was left alone for the last twenty minutes of the film. If you can get past some cheesy acting and dialogue, you'll like Long Weekend because the characters get their comeuppance, and in doing so, the film delivers a message along with its terror.

A very odd and eerie contribution to the nature-revenge filcks. This bizzare film is actually one of the better films in that genre. What ever the hell is on the beach gave me the creeps.

Looking for some annoying characters? Well look no further, but that's really the only reason I deducted a star. Besides the annoying man and woman, the rest of the movie is fantastically creepy with a great ending. Really underrated.

Proving that a lot of great cinema came out of the Australian scene circa the 1970s, Long Weekend [claims] its place as a legitimate member of the masterful macabre. Full Review
