While most of Gabe's friends are still firmly in the "girls are yucky" stage, Gabe has found his head turned by Rosemary (Charlie Ray), a cute girl in his karate class. Negotiating the tricky waters of impressing the opposite sex for the first time, Gabe works up the nerve to ask Rosemary out on a date, and in time the two begin spending their spare time together. But just when Gabe feels ready to tackle the next step and tell Rosemary that he's in love with her, he learns that she'll be spending the summer away at camp, meaning he'll have to spend his vacation pining for her. Meanwhile, as Gabe turns to Adam for advice, Adam begins taking another look at where his relationship with Leslie went sour. Little Manhattan was the first directorial effort for writer and producer Mark Levin. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A fantastic story of love between two kids who don't even understand what true love really is. Josh Hutcherson os a very talented kid, and is going places for sure. This film brings an extremely heartfelt story, a lovable cast, and tender dialogue that would make someone of any a... read morege smile. Besides a few spots that feel a little replenished, it is saved by how powerful this great love story is. A family ripped apart and a rich family come together, two opposite sides, but it doesn't stop anyone. This film is brilliant, but could have been picked up a bit better in a few scenes!

    Review
I have seen this movie twice, probably the third romantic movie that compelled me to do that, and the reasons are quite simple: It's probably impossible that anyone can't relate to young Josh Hutcherson's character, an 11 year old with a normal middle class life and problems (parents initiating divorce); that its surprise by the rediscovery of a young classmate (Charley Ray) initially as an unexpected friend and later as something else...

The well crafted work of director Mark Levin is based on the mutual discovery of all these feelings (mostly new and uncontrolled) that evolved in Josh's character and in another particular viewer: you.

Very few movies accomplished the sensation of being part of the life, joy and suffering of a film character, and believe me, that feeling won't disappoint you.

Good acting, great development of characters; but you can summarize this way: you will be surprised with the strange sensation that someone has taken a peek into your memories and heart and put it on screen.

it was quite cute if not exceedingly cliche. but who minds a little cliche if you can churn out a cute movie like this one? about the torment that is your first love! this kid is absolutely adorable.

Little romance of couple kids and part-like "Ally MacBeal" on boy's fantasy/hallucinate.

For those of you who don't know the name Josh Hutcherson, you will soon. He is a big Sci-Fi fan, and in his short career, has been in Journey To The Center of The Earth, Bridge To Terabithia, and he has also recently landed the lead in the upcoming Hunger Games trilogy. Little Ma... read morenhattan was however the film that got him started. It's a simple story about a ten year old boy and his first love. Basically, I saw it as Sex In The City from the adolescent males point of view. (It even features Cynthia Nixon and Willie Garson.) The film was cute, but it should have been so much better. The kids were acting way way WAY too mature for ten year olds. I was a ten year old boy once and nothing like THAT ever crossed my mind. The parts are written for much older kids, nevertheless, Hutcherson and Charlie Ray both do a fantastic job with their respective roles. This should have been a comedy about the awkwardness of first love, instead, it's just a cute story. It's enjoyable, but they could have done so much more with this story and this cast.

Little Manhattan is not your ordinary story about love and perhaps a very realistic tale about first romance. It's really cute and sweet. It is slightly reminiscent of (500) Days of Summer for me. Honestly, I already fell in love with it even before it reached its first minute. A moderately charming comedy depicting a fumbling prepubescent first romance in a beautiful, fairy-tale version of the borough.

What a treasure -- a funny, tart, romantic comedy about tweens suffering the pangs of first love. It makes the cityscape an essential part of the romance, like a junior, vintage Woody Allen. Full Review

Facts

    • Gabe: Look at them all. Rats in their cages...their lives destroyed by love. I'm done with it. I won't be like them.
    • Gabe: Love is an ugly, terrible business practiced by fools. It'll trample your heart and leave you bleeding on the floor. And what does it really get you in the end? Nothing but a few incredible memories that you can't ever shake. The truth is, there's gonna be other girls out there. I mean, I hope. But I'm never gonna get another first love. That one is always gonna be her.
    • Gabe: See, this is just like I told you. Same thing I knew getting into this whole mess - love ends.
    • Gabe: The truth is, you come into this world alone and leave it the exact same way.
    • Gabe: Suddenly, I knew what I had to do. Love isn't about ridiculous little words. Love is about grand gestures. Love is about airplanes pulling banners over stadiums, proposals on jumbo-trons, giant words in sky writing. Love is about going that extra mile even if it hurts, letting it all hang out there. Love is about finding courage inside of you that you didn't even know was there.
    • Gabe: It was the pain that had no name.
