Dieter Dengler, Werner Herzog

While growing up in desolated post-WW II Germany, all Dieter Dengler, the son of a Nazi slain during the war, dreamed about was becoming a pilot. He was sent to Vietnam around 1966 and on his first mission was shot down and taken prisoner. There, the Vietcong tortured and starved him until Dengler engineered a hair-raising escape and eventually returned to the U.S. where his heroic life story has been forgotten until now. Sometimes blurring the lines between fact and fiction with his trademark recurrent themes, this documentary from Werner Herzog remembers the times of the heroic Dengler. The film is divided into four chapters, each representing a period from Dengler's life; the story is recounted via interviews with the Navy pilot, archival footage and new footage seamlessly spliced together. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

A fantastic documentary by the master of cinema, Werner Herzog. It?s an honest, unbelievable and amazing story told by Dieter himself. A must see film alongside Rescue Dawn, it?s just brilliant!

A documentary about a pilot's survival against the odds after being shot down in the Vietnam War. Dieter Dengler's origins in war-torn Germany and his subsequent embrace of the American Dream make his story all the more fascinating. Though he looks remarkably fit and well here, Dengler died of motor neurone disease only four years after this film.

Effortlessly compelling true story of US-German POW.

An absolute must-see for those who liked Rescue Dawn as it tells the same story - but right from the mouth of Dengler. It's shocking to hear what he went through. It's also a Herzog documentary and therefore obviously brilliant.

Very insightful doc as Dieter Dengler retells his story of being a POW during Vietnam.

Powerful, emotional and surreal documentary from master filmmaker Werner Herzog on the life of Dieter Dengler. Herzog later went on to make the feature film about Dengler, Rescue Dawn. Dengler was shot down on a mission in Laos and held captive and tortured by Vietcong guerrillas... read more for months. Dengler, like Herzog, is a larger than life character. And after hearing his story one cant help but be touched by this incredible human being. Way better than Rescue Dawn. In fact if i had watched this before Rescue Dawn i think i would of been disappointed with Rescue Dawn. But as is, both films are incredible and go together well. This is brilliant documentary filmmaking. Herzogs signature touch is in full effect as he lays some kind of Asian throat music over footage of villages being bombed in Vietnam. And the result is goosebump inducing. Brilliant!

Bizarre in a matter-of-fact way. I need to collect my thoughts before I "properly" review this Herzog outing.

October 2009 - The story and character of Dieter Dengler is enough to make this interesting on its own. Herzog does a good job of finding such an amazing story and not staying on the way of it being heard. Werner Herzog's documentaries never fail to amaze me. Here he presents the fascinating story of a pilot shot down in Vietnam and forced to survive even in the most trying of situations.
