When he tries to rape her sister Kathy (Mariel Hemingway), Chris kills him. She is tried for the crime and defended by Carla Bondi (Anne Bancroft). Margaux Hemingway, in her film debut, is dreadful, giving a wooden performance which is only matched by that of the usually interesting Chris Sarandon. Despite some discussion of this film by feminist film critics, its only saving grace is the performance of Mariel Hemingway, who is also making her debut and gives the mature and nuanced performance she would again give in Manhattan. Lipstick, trite, bloody and dishonest, pretends to condemn rape but instead sensationalizes and exploits it. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

This was a very interesting hidden gem from the 70s. Not your typical rape revenge, but played more like an early prototype for a lifetime movie gone graphic and creepy.
People shit on Marguax Hemingway and her acting ability but I think there was nothing wrong with her at all a... read mores a leading actress and I can give you 5 names off the top of my head of awful women, that continuously get leading roles to this day, but I'll leave that out of this review.
That being said, I thought this was really good and very creepy for a mid 70's thriller that feels alittle Brian Depalma lite...which isn't such a bad thing In my opinion.
Chris Sarandon played such an absolute creepy piece of vile garbage in this, he plays the slimey reptile of a human being perfectly.
A young Mariel Hemingway plays Margaux's little sister in this, and at her very young age showed you her range trying to understand what she walked in on during the rape scene between Margaux and Sarandon.
This film also had some of the most beautiful late 70s cinematography I've ever seen for a "Cheap Exploitation film". There was nothing cheap about this film at all and for someone to just pass it off as such really needs their head checked. This film had style and substance to match, it wasn't super over the top and it wasn't boring. This film was a good watch that held my interest and didn't let up.
I'd recommend this for folks like me who like a good realistic rape/revenge drama that is ugly and beautiful all at the same time.

This movie was panned when it was released in 1976, and I never understood why. I think it's a solid and compelling thriller, well acted by all. Good camerawork, score and direction. Always interesting.
