a somewhat likable story and characters, but poor acting and serviceable script make this an ok film that feels like too many others in the genre.

Whilst there was a truly heartwarming love story at the centre of this film, it was very Hollywood and I was in no doubt that Claire and Lorenzo would find each other, that Sophie and Charlie would get together, that Charlie would climb the tree and fall off... It was very predic... read moretable to the point of being boring and I just didn't like the characters. Bernal gave a good performance as usual but the others lacked talent and charisma. Several glaringly obvious continuity mistakes and terrible acting later, I can safely say this film was not worth my time.

Very very cute movie that I very much enjoyed :)

This story was good, not great. Wouldn't say this was Amanda Seyfried's best film but it was still a nice chick flick that had you smiling. The letters were beautifully written and warmed your heart. I'd still reccomend the film, as the ending wasn't dissapointing.

With Amy Adams being all pregnant and stuff and Drew Barrymore having become a Big Important Director, Amanda Seyfried ("Dear John"), with her trademark Kewpie-doll eyes and blandly pouting lips, has officially taken over the chick flick market. This month's poison? "Letters to J... read moreuliet," a film about love and soulmates and not much else. This time, instead of fondling Channing Tatum in Iraq or chumming with Meryl Streep in Greece, Seyfried plays Sophie, a soon-to-be-married busybody American journalist simultaneously looking for her first big scoop and her first big adventure as she vacations in Verona, Italy.

Enter the bright-eyed Claire (Vanessa Redgrave, "Atonement"), who 50 years ago wrote a "Letter to Juliet" asking the Shakespearean heroine for advice about running away with her Italian love, but ended up standing him up. Because nobody loves a project like Sophie (and Cher Horowitz), the two traverse the Italian countryside looking for her Lorenzo Bartolini, with Claire's cynical grandson (Chad Michael Murray lookalike Christopher Egan, "Eragon") in tow. As the trio knock on the door after door of horny old Italian men, the bigger question at hand is: when the hell are these two going to get together?

"Juliet" attempts to fill in a level of realism missing in today's saccharine-sweet romances, trying for dialogue and actions that deviate from the predictably perfect teeth, perfect foot pop, etc. But repeatedly tugging down at a shirt or leaving palpably pregnant pauses between words is not the way to go - it's just stalling. Watching Seyfried and Egan awkwardly bumble through their lines is painful and uncomfortable, making the film seem far longer than its run time.

And what's worse, "Juliet" further attempts to stuff every romantic cliché within the confines of its slender storyline: the Englishman with a stick up his ass but a heart of gold, the self-serving journalist out to get the scoop on the perfect story, the American finding love in a foreign country, the leftover feelings of abandonment from a parent long departed, the old folks spouting wise banalities because they just have so much Life Experience, and of course: the foreign countryside as the city of love.

Verona is a beautiful city full of history and scenery, but its shallow depiction in this film is about as generic and half-assed as its story. In short, "Letters to Juliet" is a veritable puppet-show of love and grief, as predictable and insincere as - well - any romantic comedy that has come out in the past ten years. Eye-rolling has never been this boring.

This is really cute movie; I enjoyed it more than most romantic comedies. All the characters are predictable and stereotypes but charming nonetheless. Amanda Seyfried as Sophie is an excellent lead. She carries the film, and you'll love her and empathize with her. I liked her and... read more the film more than her previous effort, Mama Mia. You will root for Vanessa Redgrave's character, and you may even remember Franco Nero. He's a spaghetti western veteran well cast as sort of an older man sex symbol. The English boy, Chris Egan as Charlie; he's so over the top anal and obnoxious, you'll want to shut him up by any means necessary. However, predictably by the end of the film, Charlie finally sheds his rough exterior and displays his tender true inner self. The cinematography is awesome; it alone makes the film worth viewing. Like Diane Lane's Under the Tuscan sun before it, Letters to Juliet demonstrates that Tuscany is the hot locale now for those yearning for romance.

Ah yes, such a chick flick, but an outstanding one. Come on Guys lighten up, buy some flower, make a dinner, and invite her over for a very enjoyable movie and evening. This movie was so cheesy and predictable.... but I still really liked it!! The characters, the plot, and everything came together to make this tripe enjoyable! Great performances, but nothing Oscar worthy!! lol

I honestly thought I would be getting something a bit classier, substantial, fulfilling. Instead, what I got was a dumbed-down, cheesy and formulaic romantic comedy. Still, it's a little charming thanks to Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave and the gorgeous Italian scenery. One-no... read morete actor Gael García Bernal is terrible (so is his awful character). An example of a great concept that ultimately fails due to poor execution. Despite all of this, Sophie, Seyfried's character, is an inspiration for budding writers (such as myself).

Glorious settings and a sweetly romantic story about the pursuit of an old, perhaps lost love make this a pleasure to watch. The fact that Vanessa Redgrave, giving her customary exemplary performance, and Franco Nero play the duo and have been together in real life for almost as ... read morelong as the couple in the film have been apart lends an added layer of charm to the proceedings. Certainly not a film for cynics but for anyone who enjoys a romance every now and then this is a fine diversion.

Not to be a cynic or anything, but maybe a fictional 13-year-old isn't the best source of advice for the lovelorn. Full Review

Letters to Juliet represents an interesting paradox: it is a movie that is very nearly perfect without being especially good.
