A mountain man goes on a routine manhunt and finds himself embroiled in solving a supernatural mystery in this fantasy/adventure. The tale is set in the wilds of Montana. Lewis Gates is a heavy-drinki... read more read more...ng tracker who is called to sober up and hit the backcountry to find three murderous fugitives from the local prison. For him it is a routine assignment. But then a strange thing happens. He is almost upon their camp when he hears several whoops and shouts. He goes to the site, but finds nothing but blood, a lone arrow, and a brief sight of someone fleeing on horseback. He travels back to town and tells his story, but no one believes him, least of all the sheriff whose late daughter had been married to the mountain man before she drowned -- something the sheriff still blames the tracker for. But Gates is by then obsessed with solving the mystery and so forces himself into the library to do a little research. He soon learns that over the years 17 such unsolved mysteries have occurred and that in 1935 authorities brought to jail a naked Indian boy found running along the railroad tracks. They locked him in jail, but the boy somehow escaped and disappeared. The tracker enlists the aide of a female anthropologist who explains that over a century ago Cheyenne dog soldiers had lived in the area until the Europeans slaughtered them. The two travel deep into the wilderness and at last discover a strange waterfall. Behind it lies an ancient Cheyenne village, a peaceful place much like the Shangri-La of adventure-fantasy movies past. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

If you enjoyed "Dances With Wolves," you can't go wrong here, since the core plot is essentially the same.

Berenger and Hershey seek out and discover a Cheyenne tribe (untouched by centuries of civilization), slowly and steadily assimilate into it, then must choose within which... read more world they will live their future lives.

Attractive scenery, but don't expect the level of quality found within "Dances With Wolves." A spirit-soaring soundtrack plus dramatic-underlining narration by Wilford Brimley.

Berenger wears his delivery here quite well. Hershey does a decent job; she's definitely more than mere eye-candy. Given this is the only film Tab Murphy has ever directed, it's impressive work.

There's only been one production run of this DVD and it didn't seem another was all that likely any time soon. That may change, though, as the film's rotation has recently been increasing on TCM and AMC.

RECOMMENDATION: A bit cliche when compared to DWW, but still well spent viewing time. But be sure to see it once before plunking down $50+ for a used (or bootleg) disc from eBay or an Amazon reseller.

I thought Last of the Dogmen told a wonderful tale. An old Indian tribe hidden in the mountains makes for an interesting story.

An okay show, some things didn't fit well, but the story of a lost Indian tribe was pretty interesting anyway.

This is a outstanding movie. Very good performances by all actors/actresses. It's the type of movie I can watch over and over.

Not a bad movie and premise. A surviving free tribe of Native Americans always draws the imagination of the viewer.

one of the movies to demonstrate old fashioned values, honor, and the power of love. The dog made the value of relationships come alive, in mind.

This sumptuously photographed outdoor adventure is one of 1995's most pleasant surprises.

Lost Horizon strangely remade as a modern Western, but at least it's not a musical.

... full of one cliche after another and it's extremely predictable. Overall, the problem in the movie is that it takes itself way too seriously. Full Review
