But there's one job that needs doing first which, if Corbett can finish it, will put him in an unchallengable position -- he has to hunt down and capture (dead or alive, with the emphasis on "dead") Cuchillo Sanchez (Tomas Milian), who's wanted for raping and killing a 12-year-old girl. Corbett does what he does best, pursuing Sanchez relentlessly and on his own level of intense brutality, past the border and into Mexico -- but along the way, Corbett learns what life is like for peasants like Sanchez, and what men like Brokston have to do with it. And he discovers that Sanchez may not be the murderer that Corbett thinks he is. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Sollima's classic western is an exciting manhunt that follows the structure of a road-movie, having the two main characters meet in many different situations. A thrilling movie with a vibrant performance by Tomas Milian and an unexpected twist in the third act.

It's nowhere near as good as its reputation as the fourth greatest Spaghetti Western, but it is indeed a really cool movie. The reason it succeeds is mainly due to Italian superstar Tomas Milian, who is incredible as Cuchillo the knife expert. Lee Van Cleef is essentially playing... read more Colonel Mortimer yet again, but that character is amazing so it's not like there's any need to complain. My problem with this particular movie is that it lacks scope, there was so much potential for a truly epic bit of storytelling. I'd say it's definitely worth watching, but expecting something in league with a Leone or Corbucci classic would be a mistake.

Fun western from Sollima. Lee Van Cleef is chasing a sneaky mexican bandit, and in the process meets hot crazy girls, lazy mexican officials and other assorted characters. Soundtrack from morricone, sadly not avialable in a proper R1 DVD.

Although the films drags slightly in the middle The Big Gundown is a real blast. The opening scene is a real standout. And in my book goes down as one of the best opening scenes next to Once upon A Time In The West. Lee Van Cleef and Tomas Milian are as always awsome to watch. Es... read morepecially Milian whos character is the real highlight of this film. I can see why his character is brought back for the sequel Run Man Run.
I know in the U.S. the version thats available is cut to hell, so if your looking for a good version look elsewere. The version i watched was complete and i could see what was missing and i cant imagine the film being nearly as good without that footage.

A great spaghetti western with an even greater story. Lee Van Cleef is on the hunt for Cuchillo, a Mexican bandit whose accused of raping and murdering a 12 year old white girl. There's a twist, obviously but the ride itself is a fun one.

Big and bold spaghetti western is a bit too long for the story its trying to tell (it drags in the middle section) but the opening and closing are simply great and the performances are awesome. Van Cleef has rarely been cooler and Tomas Milian emerges as a star with this one (hi... read mores knife-vs-gun showdown is really, really great.) Sergio Sollima was a very good spaghetti director but he only made a couple of these films, unfortunately. The music is good but not great (as it was in the follow-up film, Run, Man, Run) and the production looks wonderful. General Western fans will like this one, too. Check it out.

Even if Van Cleef is a one-dimensional actor, he nevertheless has a tremendous screen presence. Full Review
