This film along with the later "Birdcage" should be compulsory viewing for all late teen agers at school. I found both films enjoyable but then I had already been to see the Stage show the films are based on, about 22 times at latest count. The show/film is a study of true love b... read more

This is a really good movie about tolerance that's most valuable for the boundaries that it pushed. In places absolutely hilarious and in other places very touching, this is a slow-mover which loses most of its points for its use of drag near the end - it's just way too obvious t... read more

February 8, 2009fb20312798Deserves it's classic status. Not only it is funnier than the more well known American remake (The Birdcage) but it is just a better movie in my opinion. One of the first films that shows homosexuals as real people and suffer from the same problems that heterosexual couples do.

Forget about the Birdcage-see the original-hysterically funny without trying so hard.

Hilarious movie that's as much about tolerance as it is about comedy. Michael Serrault is absolutely fantastic as Zaza -- he completely steals the show in my eyes.

The origina l French masterpiece of a wedding, a gay man, and his son's attempt to hide his dad's gendder bending issues, because the son is getting married to a woman he loves.

Hilarious story of gay men, one being a transsexual, who must put their lives on hold and dawn a facade of being a typical family for their son's young fiance and her ultra-conservative family. Hysterical from beginning to end!

Although my theater professor would argue that this is the better, I love the American version best. Probably because of Williams and Lane, but this isn't bad.

I was a little disappointed by the quality fo this production in comparision to the musical that hit Broadway. If you want a musical, this is not the movie for you...but this movie does showcase a moving story nonetheless. This is worth seeing once, but that's about ti in my book...
Critic Reviews
Fun & gay, literally, based on hit Broadway show.
Of all the versions, imitations, and sequels, the first 1978 French picture is the best and funniest, a fresh look at machoism and drag queens; the gay couple is superb. Full Review
How The Birdcage ought to be done and first was done.
Le Cage Aux Folles is a giddy French farce. Full Review
Love the screenplay.
The plot is really quite simple and the finale hilarious, true, but it's in the sincerity of the two primary characterizations that the movie succeeds.
