The action in this routine adventure film would be modeled on the enormously successful Indiana Jones but it is too much, too fast, too deja vu. It all starts when Jessie Huston (Sharon Stone, before ... read more read more...stardom) talks adventurer Allen Quatermain (Richard Chamberlain) into helping her find her father, an archaeologist. He has been kidnapped in Africa by a Turk (John Rhys-Davies) and a German colonel (Herbert Lom) who are determined to extract the secret location of King Solomon's mines from the stubborn man. As Jessie and Quatermain head off into the unknown, there are crocodiles, lions, and other human beasts to conquer before the father or the mines hove into view. A sequel was soon to follow. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

great adventure flick, watch with alan quatermain and the lost city of gold
  • December 14, 2006
Weird adventure and often clumsy with logic making the action hopelessly cartoonish.

    A bad Indiana imitation.

A very obvious rip-off/cash-in on the Indiana Jones franchise (with a smaller debt owed to Romancing the Stone). In many ways I enjoyed this much better than the previously mention bigger-budget and bigger-leading-man films. You may actually view this as a parody of those films (... read morehell, even John Rhys-Davies has a major role in this!). Strangely, there are a few things which remind me of the later Last Crusade, so maybe the influences were reciprocated. A woman arrives in Africa in attempt to find her lost archeologist father. The adventurer she hires to help her find her father saves her from many perils (because she's a know-it-all ditz, of course) and it is soon learned she is targeted by the same people who kidnapped her father. The archeologist has a map to the legendary diamond mines, but refuses to interpret it for a ruthless group with includes Turks and (of course) Germans (pre-WWI, but still very nazsti, as Germans always are portayed in Hollywood). There are a shit-ton of Indiana Jones-type troubles which occur as they all race to get the riches with getting wrapped in a carpet, swords, a dog-fight, jumping on a running train, gun fights, tribes, wild animals, Muslims, and various other scary things. Yes, an over-used formula (see: Remo Williams, High Road to China, Operation Condor, Jake Speed, etc), but the humor is great throughout (especially the race-based jokes), the storyline moves along a good pace, and the characters are all fun. Sometimes dark and brutal, but never so much as Temple of Doom; really worth a watch for any comedy or adventure fan.

Now here's a fun movie! It starts off ridiculous and keeps you in a state of wonder as you shake your head in disbelief as to WHY some of the scenes and actions are taking place. The film is probably more suited towards younger viewers in terms of entertainment; but the movie is ... read morestill fun to watch if you're not taking it seriously.

Vastly superior to its rather lackluster sequel ALLAN QUATERMAIN AND THER LOST CITY OF GOLD (which was actually filmed back-to-back with this production), this entertaining and fun loving tribute (or some might say rip-off) of the Indiana Jones movies benefits (unlike its follow-... read moreup) by the sure hand and capable direction of veteran J. Lee Thompson (of the original GUNS OF NAVARONE) and a suberp supporting cast that includes the always entertaining and eminently watchable John Rhys-Davies and Herbert Lom as the two main villains, a Turkish slaver and a World War I era German Colonel respectively.
Based very loosely on the classic H. Rider Haggard adventure novel of the same name, this movie features Richard Chamberlain as adventurer Allan Quaterman who is recruited by the sexy and gorgeous Jessie Huston (played by a pre-famous Sharon Stone) to rescue her father who has fallen into the villains hands in attempt to locate the fabled King Solomon's mines.
What follows is a fast paced, fun and thoroughly entertaining adventure with some eye popping stunts and some truly cheesy special effects.
No matter though, this movie promises high adventure and entertaining escapism. Movie fans will have fun spotting references to other movies of the 1980s from the Indiana Jones adventures to 1983s FOOTLOOSE and that movies game of unintentional chicken.
I was one of the (evidently) few who actually made it to see this movie in the theaters on its release in 1985 and one who instantly picked it up on VHS. Of course when the DVD was released in February of this year I was there to instantly pick it up. Still fun after almost 20 years.

This is one of those films you'd catch on HBO on Saturday in the middle of the afternoon. I have fond, if not slightly fuzzy memories of this movie. For some reason, my most vivid memory is the end credits.

A shallow and pale remake; stick with the 1950 version.
