Eventually, the truth comes out and the authorities take the baby away from Chaplin. He steals the child back, but is soon discovered and separated once again from him. Charles Chaplin is the first to combine comedy with poignancy, and a little touch of neo-realism, and did it perfectly. The opening title card said it all about this silent masterpiece: "A Picture with a Smile- and perhaps a tear." The dream sequence was a surprise though...

This has always been a classic but I prefered Keaton more.

The only time I ever go against my "modern cinema" rule is when it pertains to Charie Chaplin. His movies were simple, but brilliant. He was WAY ahead of his time. I'm always amazed by how much I enjoy Charlie Chaplin films. It feels as though a film that came out in 1921 should be so far removed that one watches it for its cultural significance /at that time/ and to respect its place in history. Honestly, a lot of those old flicks aren't a... read morenything I'd ever want to rewatch. But all of Chaplin's flicks I've seen, including one of his first, The Kid, are so ridiculously entertaining that I find it hard to believe that this was brought about near the beginning of cinema. I went from tearing up for the plight of the tramp and his child to laughing out loud at some of the great visual gags. The entire movie is a really enjoyable experience and I can't recommend it enough.

Excellent film. Great storytelling and special effects. I was bothered by the fact that Chaplin's character drummed up business by breaking people's windows (so he could then fix them). That his character loved the kid is made abundantly clear. Touching.
