Based off of a novel by Novala Takemoto, Tetsuya Nakashima's Kamikaze Girls is a Japanese comedy that comes full of style.

At first glance, this picture looks like a 1 hour 40 minute girlish movie. Sure, it does have elements of that, but there is much more to the film

... read morethat makes it watchable by guys and girls alike. The first 15 minutes throws everything on the floor and lays it out just as fast. The pacing is frantic, yet manageable, as the lead character, Momoko, builds up her story. Gradually things settle down, just a bit, as the main plot takes off.

The story of two unlikely friends is good on its own, but Nakashima's directing is absolutely worthy of note. He knows what he wants out of every scene and he gets it. Scene transitions, quirky dialogue, and colorful settings light up the film from beginning to end.

Both the beautiful Kyoko Fukada and Anna Tsuchiya put on stellar performances and they have no problem putting this film on their shoulders. No wonder this film is as good as it is. The supporting cast is also great, despite being overshadowed by the two leads.

Kamikaze Girls is a director's dream that shines on many levels. It is a highlight in Japanese movie making.

So cute and funny. Watched this after Whip It, and they actually go really well together! Both about girl power, both about social minorities, and both move fast and don't really worry too much about a plot. Liked it a lot.

Sometimes animated, sometimes strange, but always entertaining, it's an eccentric film about teens that manages to be surreal, dramatic, and comedic all at the same time.

In the end, I can't say if there was anything too deep or substantial about Kamikaze Girls. It's a highly ... read moreentertaining film with great comedy, but maybe its problem is that it never found much time for anything more in-between the laughs, but damn it looks great.

A Japanese cross between Amelie and Ghost World. It's hyperactive and never gives you a chance to rest. Switching from sped up back story and cartoon stories etc. The visuals are fantastic with the colours really being brought out. Based on a cult novel you should also buy. Hila... read morerious in parts and a tale of true friendship. The performances are OTT and fit the wacky characters perfectly. Despite the fast frenetic style, it isn't headache inducing. So sit back and it's over in a flash ready for another viewing. Whoopee.

Giggly girly teen film with two Japanese pop stars leads... ugh. More fool me. This took me completely by surprise. Witty quirky funny imaginative smile on the face from the very first minute. Just your typical tale of a Japanese girl obsessed with the French Rococo period. It's mental and a lot of fun, but it also has heart. Reckon it was edited by Tony Scott after a drug binge too.

movie initially struck me as Monty Python meets Harold and Maude. A lot of references are thrown towards Japanese Thelma and Louise, but that way off course. The tow leads in the movie are more similar than they are different. They have both broken in a direction opposite of ther... read moree upbringing in order to form a stable platform for their existence. Monoko, the highly intelligent daughter of a failed yakuza who is settled into his semi-successful life selling sic Vesachi knock-off tee-shirts and bags on the streets of there backwoods Japanese villiage. She breaks from her tough and dysfunctional life into 1800 French apparel Rococo. In contrast is Ichigo, a dullard raised in a middle class family who broke from her traditions to become a tough, spitting and fighting biker girl chick. Ichigo meets Monoko after her father is kicked out of the market for copy write issues and Monoko must pay for her jones to purchased the latest in clothes. She offers her fathers clothes on the internet. The appeal for Ichigo, to hand around Monoko is at first kind of puzzling and in the end kind of less than satisfying. If the last third of the movie was extrodinary as the first two third this would make a 4.5+ star movie. The opening exposition is extrodinary with animated sequences and interesting camera work.

An eccentric tale of two completely different Japanese teenage girls, one a biker, one obsessed with the Rococo era. Visually it's a treat, with colourful sets and some cool animation snippets thrown in. Took me a while to get into it, but once I did it turned out to be a fun ride.
