Based off of a novel by Novala Takemoto, Tetsuya Nakashima's Kamikaze Girls is a Japanese comedy that comes full of style. At first glance, this picture looks like a 1 hour 40 minute girlish movie. Sure, it does have elements of that, but there is much more to the film

So cute and funny. Watched this after Whip It, and they actually go really well together! Both about girl power, both about social minorities, and both move fast and don't really worry too much about a plot. Liked it a lot.

Sometimes animated, sometimes strange, but always entertaining, it's an eccentric film about teens that manages to be surreal, dramatic, and comedic all at the same time.
In the end, I can't say if there was anything too deep or substantial about Kamikaze Girls. It's a highly ... read more -

Just your typical tale of a Japanese girl obsessed with the French Rococo period. It's mental and a lot of fun, but it also has heart. Reckon it was edited by Tony Scott after a drug binge too.

An eccentric tale of two completely different Japanese teenage girls, one a biker, one obsessed with the Rococo era. Visually it's a treat, with colourful sets and some cool animation snippets thrown in. Took me a while to get into it, but once I did it turned out to be a fun ride.

Critic Reviews
As exciting for its beautifully specific and honest portrayal of teenage girls and their friendships as it is for its dazzling visual and narrative style. Full Review
This droll Japanese import puts the predictable banality of most Hollywood teen flicks to shame. Full Review
What Kamikaze Girls doesn't have is a plot
The yummy Japanese confection Kamikaze Girls deserves both a better title and an audience to go with it. Full Review
If you value plausibility in movies, skip Kamikaze Girls. Full Review
The premise of Kamikaze might be similar to a younger and kitschy Thelma & Louise, but it is never less than appealingly surreal.
An inventive bittersweet celebration of Japanese youth culture. Full Review
Older audiences may be required to get back in touch with their adolescent appetites for garish decor. Full Review
