A slacker tries to do the right thing for his family with unexpectedly chaotic results in this independent comedy. Salman (Scott Prendergast) is an out-of-work twentysomething who has few skills and f... read more read more...ewer prospects. However, things are significantly worse for his older brother -- his National Guard unit has been called back to Iraq, and his wife, Leslie (Lisa Kudrow), needs to go back to work in order to support their children. However, Leslie doesn't have anyone to look after her two sons, so when Salman learns of her sad situation, he volunteers to move in and help mind the kids. Salman quickly discovers the boys are nearly psychotic and will stop at nothing to get him out of the house, including putting sharp objects in his breakfast. With the household still short on money, Leslie helps Salman get a job, and soon he's become the corporate mascot for a failing Internet company, who pounds the pavement wearing a strange blue costume hoping to drum up interest in renting space in the corporate offices. The first feature film as writer and director for actor Scott Prendergast, Kabluey also stars Christine Taylor, Conchata Ferrell, Teri Garr, and Chris Parnell. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Strange little movie that really made me laugh. Dealing with murderous kids (literally), the world's shittiest job (bar none), a sweet, kind lady who wants to run him down with her car every time she spots him... oh yeah, and an old man who has a deep and loving relationship with... read more his soup thermos. I can't believe Lisa Kudrow is so hilarious even when she's not loud and noisy like Phoebe. This is definitely an indie film, but it's not the sugary, embrace life kind of indie and that is refreshing. Scott Prendergast manages to make the most inane things hilarious, and as a re... read moresult puts an interesting spin on the tried-and-true subject of dysfunctional family. I wish this movie had been put on wider release because I think it could have done well given the right distribution. Oh well, at least I got to see it...

The best thing about "Kabluey," the debut film from writer/director/actor Scott Prendergast, is the title. Second best is the costume that the lead character wears through much of the film: a sort of smurf with existential angst. Everything else about the film, fro... read morem the acting to the script to the direction is horrendous.

It pains me to say this, but Mr. Prendergast is just a mediocre, shallow filmmaker. He seems like the kind of person that can come up with a great premise, but that's it. He should pitch ideas to real scriptwriters who can take his premise and build a real story around it. "Kabluey" is so shallow that it can't be said that it even is a real story. It's a sketch of a story. After a real scriptwriter develops a screenplay with a deep and interesting story, Prendergast should hire a real director to turn it into a movie. Prendergast does not appear to be at all skilled as a director.

One of my favorite movies of the year. Wonderfully droll. Think Todd Solondz with a slightly bigger heart. Slightly. Great performances from Lisa Kudrow and Conchata Ferrell. Scogtt Prendergast is a triple threat here, creating a character so original, rootable, and sad all ... read moreat once.

In "Kabluey," Leslie(Lisa Kudrow) is in dire straits as her husband's tour of duty has been extended in Iraq and she is solely responsible for her two rambunctious sons, Lincoln(Landon Henninger) and Cameron(Cameron Wofford). Out of desperation, she calls on... read more her brother-in-law, Salman(Scott Prendergast, who also wrote and directed), who she has not talked to since her wedding.(Something about the fire department being called.) He is available because he got fired at his latest job for excessive laminating. But his first two days as a nanny do not work out that well and she wants him gone but he is flat broke. So, she gets him a job at the moribund internet company she works at, handing out flyers dressed in a blue costume in the middle of nowhere...

Luckily, Scott Prendergast's script is a lot more thought out than the above scheme, dovetailing plot threads into the main story with precision while being funny and warm in equal measure.(It also invokes the cliche that any mascot costume introduced in the first act will make an appearance in the third act.) No matter how amusing the movie may be, along with being about loneliness, it is also about how we all need to pull together in a time of war.(It is no coincidence that the family name is Miniver, after "Mrs. Miniver," made in 1942 about the English home front during World War II.) And it should be noted that I think the wrong family member was sent to Iraq. Send those kids and the insurgents would surrender in two weeks, three tops.(Oh well. Maybe they can do that for a sequel...)

An indie dramedy that, for all its undeniable quirks, remains grounded in a greater sense of humanity, thanks in no small part to Lisa Kudrow's supporting performance.

One of those goes no where, slice of life, funny in a depressing sort of way independent films. Good really good and in its own off-beat way very true to life. I would definately recommend.

Had some really nice moments but I was left with very mixed feelings.

wickedly funny comedy that had me in mind as its target audience this just made me laugh as an uncle comes to help take care of his brother's kids while he is in iraq.

This has got to be the funniest movie that I have seen in quite some time. I giggled quietly here and there at first...until I found myself laughing with such side-splitting force that I had to rewind and re-watch parts missed from all the guffawing noises. A pleasure.

While it borrows from obvious sources, Kabluey eventually comes into its own as a wacky commentary on the state of America in the fifth year of the Iraq war. Full Review

Kabluey, which has no discernible political agenda, is wildly uneven and often seems like a short stretched to feature length. But it's also kind of oddly endearing. Full Review
