This is a difficult one to peg ... as the few "joyful moments" in the film for thosevwith faith are the few musical numbers the gospel choir performs for mass audiences. Other than that ...the uber-religious will be offended by some of the story tangents and the non-religious wi... read morell simply be disspelled. Joyful Noise never finds its happy medium ... Dolly Parton (Steel Magnolias, 9 to 5) plays the widow of a church gospel choir conductor who feels slighted that the chuch has bestowed the new title upon singer, Queen Latifah (Chicago, Bringing Down the House, The Bone Collector). Talented as she may be, it is obvious she is slightly-out-out-touch with reality (which will offend the gospel choir enthusiasts!). Her daughter (a truly talented Keke Palmer - Akeelah and the Bee) and her possible male-friend (Jeremy Jordan - a newbie with vocal skills!) believe they know music and how it pertains to the human heart and the Bible. Joyful Noise is a competition for chuch choirs ... and the story is of a small Georgia church getting to the finals. It isn't a BAD film; but it isn't great as it misses so many of its marks. It doens't know WHO it is aiming for ... and this hurts. It is watchable; but I think those who it wants to target will not listen. Parton is an icon ... I love her and say what you will about her, she has talent (singing and as a passable actress). The film doesn't know what it truly wants to be as it offends many but isn't persuasive enough to win now converts. I do not think the singing will be enough for some; but ... they are nice numbers. As for the movie ... :(

Formulaic entertainment that suffers whenever Queen Latifah or Dolly Parton is off the screen. They are both in fine voice although it's a horror show what Dolly has done to her face. Enjoyable but forgettable and minor.

    WAS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!

The movie begins with a miracle. An interracial church choir from a dying rural town in Georgia (90 miles in an unspecified direction from Atlanta) is competing in a choir competition. Kris Kristofferson plays the director, and Queen Latifah plays the assistant director. Krist... read moreofferson is soon ushered off the stage (he suffers a fatal heart attack while directing the choir). This sets up the central "conflict" of the movie-between Queen Latifah's "Vi Rose" and Dolly Parton's "G.G.," the widow of Kristofferson's character. There is also a budding romance between Latifah's daughter, "Olivia" and Parton's grandson "Walter." The principal objection to this comes from Latifah-not on racial grounds, but because "Walter" is a "bad boy." There also is a romantic subplot ( or at least "hook-up") between an African American choir member and an Asian one. All of this is to say that "Realism" is not something to which the filmmakers aspired. One could really get the "good" out of the movie by purchasing the sound track CD. Latifah and Parton are favorite performers of mine and I enjoyed watching them, but mostly in the musical numbers.

Good music, decent acting, glee type singing, just the story is weak.

Everytime Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah start belting for God, Joyful Noise lives up to its name. Alas, it's not as much a good time as you'd want it to be, despite the direction of Todd Graff who wowed us ten years ago with his raw and emotional tribute to musical theatre, Camp... read more. When not singing Parton and Latifah have to spit dialog that is anything but music to your ears. There's liposuction references and plastic surgery jokes, all delivered with no subtlety. Set in Pacashu, Georgia, the movie's two big stars are rivals looking to head the Divinity Church choir. Something like that, since it's hard to figure out what exactly is at stake in this piffle. The movie is desperate to be something like Glee, and in a way it is: I've lost interest in that too.

The cheese factor is high, but the plot is heartwarming and uplifting and the music is phenomenal. Queen Latifah especially stands out in her role, and the songs will stay with me for a long time. I really enjoyed this movie, much more than I expected to.

I truly liked this movie. I think we really need more "feel good" movies right now we have enough drama in our lives today.
