Filmmaker Grant Gee speaks with now-deceased Factory Records founder Tony Wilson; legendary producer Martin Hannett; surviving Joy Division band members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, and Peter Hook;... read more read more... and the late Ian Curtis's Belgian lover Annik Honoré in order to offer a vivid snapshot of the fleeting moment in time when Manchester's Joy Division changed the face of modern music. Born in the bleak landscape of industrialized Manchester -- a city that once thrived as a center of 19th century manufacturing but was far removed from its halcyon days by the time the band was founded -- Joy Division combined the energy of punk rock with the anger and alienation of their generation to stunning effect. When he wasn't pouring every ounce of his personal energy into penning poetic lyrics for a band that seemed to thrive on chaos, volatile frontman Curtis supported his family by working in the civil service as an Assistant Disablement Resettlement Officer. In 1980, as the band was set to embark on their first-ever North American tour, Curtis took his own life at the age of 23. In addition to offering the remarkable story of Joy Division as told by the very people who were privileged enough to have been there at that crucial moment in musical history, Gee's film also offers a meditation on the city that was struggling to reinvent itself following a devastating collapse. While Curtis's widow Deborah does not appear onscreen, text from her biography Touching from a Distance appear as a constant reminder of her presence in the talented musician's brilliant but fleeting life. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

One of the best and honest accounts of one of the most influential rock bands you're ever likely to see. Glad to see a documentary about Joy Division that focuses on the band themselves. Really really worth the watch!

Less accessible to newcomers to Joy Division than the estimable 'Control' but a treasure for fans with copious extras.

A remarkably well made documentary about the band Joy Division, the city of Manchester and the music scene the sprung from there in the late 70's and which continues to be a vital source of talent and influence in the music industry today.

While I enjoyed this film immensely.... read more..I can't say that it is for everyone.

But if you have any interest in the bands Warsaw, Joy Division or New Order...or if you are a fan of the British music scene in general, you will no doubt find this a wonderful retrospective of not just an amazing band...but of an incredibly interesting and complex city as well.

Interesting documentary, even for a non-Joy Division fan like me. I liked how it was shot - the combination of past and present, and also how you got multiple different perspectives on the Ian Curtis story.

Good...interesting subject...had just seen the other two Joy Division related films...this was the least of the three...

A good look at the history of Joy Division from the perspective of the other guys in the band (New Order. Make a night of Joy Division. Watch this, then watch 2007's Control.

probably the best music doc i've seen. so complete, given the resorces. got all sad with tony wilson's parts(now deceased) and even peel(dead too). made me want rob gretton(yup, him too) to have told an anecdote or twelve. the extras are like an extra hour of the doc and enjoyabl... read moree as well.

I loved this documentary. It really reminded me of how great Joy Division's music is and it was interesting to hear the bandmates talk about Ian Curtis' death...something I had never heard before and was rather moving because it STILL affects them all these years later.

A great documentary that acts as an audio/visual history lesson and a great double feature to Anton Corbijn's "Control" [the biopic on Ian Curtis]. It was really fascinating to hear the story told by the guys [and then some]. And I must add, there is sort of a nerdy charm to Step... read morehen Morris... and Hooky often comes across as kind of a tool...
