Fortunately, he stages a spectacular comeback, thanks in great part to the release of The Jolson Story! The film's Pirandellian overtones come to a head when Larry Parks as Jolson meets Larry Parks as Larry Parks. Also returning from The Jolson Story are William Demarest as the title character's manager Steve Martin, Bill Goodwyn as Broadway-producer Tom Baron, and Ludwig Donath and Tamara Shayne as Jolson's old-world parents. Barbara Hale appears as Jolson's wife (his third, though this fact is not dwelled upon), renamed Ellen Clark for the moment, while Myron McCormick plays a composite character based on several Hollywood executives (including, one supposes, Columbia mogul Harry Cohn).     As with most sequels, it's not quite up with the original, The Jolson Story, and this film doesn't seem to have enough material left to keep it afloat. It's well made and professionally done. It's better than average.

    Hilarious premise: Jolson, played by Larry Parks, attempts a comeback after Larry Parks, played by Larry Parks, makes him newly popular by playing the real Jolson (played by Larry Parks) in The Jolson Story. You don't care. Great songs, sung by Jolson while Parks mimes.

    This sequal to 'The Jolson Story' does not match it in greatness.It comes off as a less than enthusiastic mockumentary.The best parts were the cutbacks to the original 'The Jolson Story' and of course Jolson's singing.It's also a shame that Al Jolson himself did not make a cameo ... read morein this film.This one is a deflating experience after enjoying the first film.
