Jay (Jason Mews) and Silent Bob (Smith) are a pair of stoned New Jersey slackers who have long been used as the templates for a pair of popular comic book heroes, Bluntman and Chronic. When they learn that their alter egos are to be turned into a major motion picture without their consent or compensation, the pair sets off for Hollywood to sabotage the production. Along the way, they encounter an ape, a nun (Carrie Fisher), the cast of Scooby-Doo, a Charlie's Angels-style band of sexy women who use them as stool pigeons in a diamond heist, and an unhinged wildlife ranger (Will Ferrell). They also meet up with some regulars from the Smith canon, including Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), Brian O'Halloran as Dante Hicks, Jason Lee as Banky Edwards, Alanis Morissette as God, and actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in dual roles as themselves and two other familiar characters. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back co-stars numerous other recognizable performers in roles of various sizes, including Shannen Doherty, Jason Biggs, James Van Der Beek, Shannon Elizabeth, Tracy Morgan, Judd Nelson, Chris Rock, and George Carlin, among others. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

A ridiculous, brainless comedy, but what else would you expect from Jay & Silent Bob?
  • August 28, 2011
Only for the most seasoned of View Askiewniverse fans, Kevin Smith wrongfully ends his series of films with an all out compilation of every movie in aforementioned universe. (Only to revisit it in Clerks II five years later.) Ranging from Clerks to Chasing Amy to Scream 3, Smith ... read moreincludes his usual cast of favorites, including Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Joey Lauren Adams and so on and so forth. Instead of his usual structured storyline and cast of quirky characters, only showing their faces for a fraction of screen time, Smith follows the two most unlikely of protagonists: Jay and Silent Bob. They originally appeared in the first Clerks film, Smith portraying Silent Bob and Jason Mewes playing Jay. They get high, make innuendos about their sexual prowess, and supply homophobia jests, usually deemed offensive but that's just the New Jerysian vibe of the character that is Jay. Smith also includes several new faces, including SNL vets Will Ferrell and Chris Rock, a team of women jewel thieves, which include Shannon Elizabeth and Eliza Dushku, and Star Wars alums Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. A lot of this is on the shoulders of the cast opposed to the writing, as it's a series of cameos strung together with dialogue. All in all, the content of the film can't be judged, as it is as silly and irrevocably stupid as the films Joe Dirt or Dumb or Dumber. If you laugh once or twice, or can be amused by the various "breaking the third wall in-jokes" and references to EVERY single Kevin Smith movie ever made, then it's worth a watch, but if you like your comedy to be belly laugh inducing, steer clear. This is a zany tale, with orangutans, hot women in spandex, and the antics of a pot smoking duo with marginally ignorant yet childlike personas. Especially do not watch if you haven't seen any or only one Kevin Smith, as much of this won't make any sense.

Jay: [typing a message on an internet chat room] All you motherfuckers are gonna pay. You are the ones who are the ball-lickers.

Great to see Jay and Silent Bob in their own flick. There is nothing bad about this movie if you are an avid and devoted fan of the View Askewniverse.... read more If you haven't seen Smith's previous four films, you will be lost for a big portion of the film. Having said that, I really enjoy this film, which I've seen countless times and always find little references from Smith's past films and even hints to his new ones. The perfect movie for the perfect legacy. Snootch to the bootch. Anyways, this film is clearly very goofy and stupid, but that is the humor that has been the back wheel of all of their roles in Smith's films. Love all of the little inside jokes that Smith included, and these zany characters are just plain lovable. This is and will always be one of my favorite films of all time. Ladies, ladies, ladies, Jay and Silent Bob are in the hizouse! Highly recommended.

Hilarious. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back features endless cameos from some pretty big names. Wes Craven and Gus Van Sant even have cameos. It is hilarious for what it is. The comedy is not what you would call tasteful, but I'd hope you would know that. It jokes about apes "smoki... read moreng pole," being the "clit commander," and "sucking dick off." Along the way they run into Scooby Doo, and a gang of hot jewel thief's. Never boring, always outrageous, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is another great comedy from Kevin Smith and his grea cast of characters.

I don't think I've ever seen a finer example of a cinematic ego trip than this. This film is essentially a 114 minute exercise in fan wankery and in-jokes. It's probably best to see this only if you're a fan of Kevin Smith, or have good knowledge of his work.

If you didn't al... read moreready know (based on my past reviews) I am a Smith fan. I recognize that this really isn't a traditional movie with a great plot, but, when something like this is made with love, care, and wit, and overflowing with jokes, that's okay- especially when you get 'em.

I need to bring up my bias again because, really, if you look at this objectively, it's a generic (and flimsy) story tied together with some very fragile threads. Somehow it all works, despite being a gaudy, overblown mess. You dodn't need to be drunk or high to enjoy this, but it probably wouldn't hurt.

It really helps if you are a fan of Kevin Smith films to appreciate this movie, which is full of characters, references and inside jokes from his former flicks that everyone not familiar with them will probably be lost and somewhat annoyed at the admittedly below the belt humor t... read morehat is often shown here. Movie fans, especially those of Star Wars, will spot a couple of references too. Some jokes are insanely funny, others are just low and belong into the lowest category of humor. That doesn't ruin the film though, which is simply so fast paced, silly and making fun of the film industry that you won't be bored for a minute. Just don't expect intelligent or quiet humor.

More of a fluff piece next to where Kevin Smith has usually taken his films, but it's fun none the less. A fond farewell or succumbing to the fans? Either way, let?s hope it?s the last we see (apart from Clerks 2) as they are becoming quite annoying now!

Kevin Smith makes one big ego trip into a damn hilarious, nod and a wink comedy. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is a big-budget in-joke. This isn't for the masses, it's for those familiar with Smith's work and characters. Those not familiar will no doubt be lost. The jokes are mu... read morech simpler, but just as funny in context. The cast are all having more fun than the audience, but the audience should still be inhysterics. Ben Affleck's dead hooker fiascoes, C.L.I.T, and a Scooby Doo parody are just some of the highlights. It's a fun movie made by a filmmaker doing something a bit bigger for his friends and fans. If you enjoy Smith's work then this is a must, but don't expect the raw edginess of Clerks.

Has the lazy, bric-a-brac atmosphere of one of those blown-off movies made during down time on some bigger affair. Full Review

I admit to enjoying -- in a drunken, half-asleep kind of way -- parts of this ramshackle road movie with its running Miramax guest stars and its endless homo jokes. Full Review

Smith, coming off the madly audacious Dogma, knows that he's slumming this time and revels in it. Full Review

The picture lacks the mix of innocence and savagery that branded [Smith's] other films.

In keeping with the Smith rules, the movie is irreverent, self-referential, twisted, cheap and tasteless. And, of course, I mean that as the highest compliment.

In addition to being [Smith's] filthiest, this is his most free-associative movie. In spite of and because of its homemade look, it's also his funniest. Full Review
