James Avati: King of Bookcovers (2000)

James Avati's lengthy career as a book cover illustrator is chronicled in this video. Avati created illustrations for such magazines as Collier's and The Ladies Home Journal. This exposure made it pos... read more sible for him to later land his pivotal job with New American Library Publishers, where he designed paperback covers. Avati's artwork graced the covers of books written by such noted authors as J.D. Salinger, William Faulkner, and John O'Hara. Unlike many other illustrators, Avati insisted on first reading each book before designing its cover. Many attribute part of his success to this practice.
