Zhu's train is a steam-powered engine fueled by coal that's been obsolete for years, and while Zhu loves his job, no one pretends that progress won't eventually catch up to the line he works. Zhu's assistant is a young man named Zhihong (Liu Yuansheng) who clearly looks up to the veteran engineer. Zhu has devoted his life to the trains, but when he's told it's time for him to retire, he willingly walks away from his career and leaves the village to spend some time with his family. But young Zhihong cares too much about the trains and his friend to give up, and he decides to follow Zhu in hopes of persuading him to return, much to the puzzlement of the old man.
