Climbing the beanstalk, Jack encounters a strange and remarkable world ruled by the magical Princess Margaret. The princess is in love with Prince Tulip despite his unattractive features and harsh personality, but as it turns out, this is the work of Mother Hecuba, an evil witch who has cast a spell on the princess so she will marry Tulip, her only son. Can Jack help the princess avoid this awful fate? Directed by Japanese animator Gisaburo Sugii, this free adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk has won a cult following for its fanciful story and wildly colorful design. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Amzingl bizzarre movie. I remember watching it as a kid and thinking there was something not right about it, but I couldn't put my finget on it. Watching it as an adult, there is stuff in there that is just insane. The music is influenced by Jesus Christ Superstar, and the Jac... read morek's mother beats him. But most disturbing of all the giant is really a stooge. He isn't evil, just misunderstood. And for that Jack kills him. Good stuff. This was originally a Japanese production that was dubbed over by the same people who dubbed Kimba The White Lion. I got my hands on a VHS copy of the original Japanese version a few years ago, and the music and effects track is exactly the same. The one difference is there is a 5 minute animated prologe that never made it to the American version. It is way out of sync with the rest of the film and does not feature any of the characters. I had a Japanese person translate it for me, it was basically a way to rouse the audience into singing along with the film. At the end of the prologue ever one is encourage to summon Jack. This is why the film opens so abbrupty with Jack popping into frame.

I've watched and loved this movie as a kid and watching it now as an adult I see all the psychological weirdness about this movie. It's definitely worth seeing as an adult for the sheer bizarreness of it all keeping in mind this was made for children. I would screen it first bef... read moreore showing your kids. The music is weirdly compelling and there are many sequences that are surreal bordering on psychedelic. The animation is good considering the age of the movie. This movie is both psychological and entertaining. There's an enchanted princess, people turned to mice, a talking harp, a golden chicken, and some paper cut out people. The main elements of the original Jack and the beanstalk tale are here with a unique and interesting twist and fun characters.

.....This movie is on here?! Wow! I remember watching this all the time as a kid. I thought it was awsome. The giant's evil mother made me laugh when she ran to catch Jack. And the giant's name being "Tulip" was just perfect. My sister and I used to sing alone with the princess's... read more "No One's Happier Than I," and years later, when the movie had been lost for several years, I remembered the song and attempted to play it on my keyboard. 5 years after that, I find it on Flixster and remember the times I watched the dog dance and sing and the mice scurry up the beanstalk. Good times. I think I'm going to go find this on Amazon and buy it. :D

I used to watch this all the time as a kid, and I recently had the oppurtunity to watch it again. Wow, is this the weirdest interpretation of Jack and the Beanstalk ever or what? Had I seen this for the first time I probably would have been laughing the whole way through. The ... read moremusic is cheesy beyond belief, but it does bring back a number of childhood memories. My favorite musical number is definitely the dog's. Plus, the princess reminds me a lot of this person I used to work with. Needless to say, this is now the latest guilty pleasure added to my "To Buy" list.
