Along with such luminaries as Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti , Kerouac expressed deep disillusionment with the materialism of American culture. He gained fame for his book On the Road, which chronicles his adventures on a cross-country journey from the east to the west coast. The book's spontaneous prose style describes a scene in which mysticism, drugs and alcohol use, and hedonism play a large part.
