Irina Palm is a perverse tale of the odd sacrifice of a desperate grandmother for her terminally-ill grandson. Grace amid shame. Genuinely sentimental. Well-delivered.

Indifference British film in the drama story of a retired grandmother who acts to raise the cash in a fashion that surprises everyone, but her for her own terminally ill grandson's health deteriorates. I'm sick of sexual activities what a retired grandmother works for in the 'Sex... read more

May 27, 2009fb1144932598Delightful, infuriating, improbable, laugh out loud funny, and a surprisingly entertaining tale of a woman who finds herself out of her depth and working in the sex trades. Her transformation from a quiet little mouse afraid to ask for a job to a force to be reckoned with is what... read more

Moving and entertaining, but oversimplified film carried entirely by a fantastic cast. Marianne Faithfull is an absolute must-see, her performance is nothing short of sublime. Unfortunately the rest of the film is not able to match her stunning portrayal of "Irina Palm".

Irina Palm was not at all what I was expecting it to be & I know I definitely didnt expect to like it as much as I did.

I would have preferred to see Jenny Agutter's character expend the effort, and Marianne Faithful's character hold the bucket...but unfortunately, there was no bucket, though she did go though a lot of Kleenex. Anyway, it was humorous to see Marianne portray disdain for something... read more

Quiet , simple & novel story extremely well-acted by MFaithfull. It was nice to see both Marianne & Jenny Agutter again. And btw, even tho "glory holes" were involved, there was no graphic sex.

Rarely have I enjoyed a film this much when I also found so much wrong with it. The biggest reasons for liking Irina Palm are Marianne Faithful and Miki Manojlovic. They are terrific, both humble and genuine in their roles of hand-jobbist and sex-club owner, respectively. I hesit... read more

This was a touching movie that I saw at the film festival, its first showing in the US. Marianne was great as a grandmother who would do anything to get money to help her grandson. Highly recommended but delicate subject matter

Although director and co-writer Sam Garbarski takes great care in tracing this difficult dramatic path (he has to balance the twin tracks of other people's morality and Maggie's personal course), he c... Full Review
This would never have worked with anyone else but Faithfull, who gives a touching performance even as she flaunts her 40-year metamorphosis from porcelain pop diva to elderly bad girl. Full Review
Irina Palm is saddled with an odd title, an outlandish plot and an unlikely star--notorious rock maven Marianne Faithfull cast as a suburban frump. But it turns out a success Full Review
Even if there aren't many other reasons to give this contrived and too often silly film a chance, Faithfull makes a captivating leading lady. Full Review
Although Faithfull only sporadically makes movies anymore, it's hard to imagine anyone who could have done this role better. Full Review
Genially preposterous and pleasantly diverting, it balances calculation against humanity and generally comes out on top. Full Review
Irina Palm is, for the most part, a phony trifle, but at its heart, somehow, is a real and fascinating person.
Director Sam Garbarski must like his early Neil Jordan and Stephen Frears, since Irina Palm plays like a throwback to gritty-but-softhearted English dramas of the 1980s like Mona Lisa and Sammy and Ro... Full Review
