After chronicling various chapters of Irish history in such films as In the Name of the Father and The Field, writer/director Jim Sheridan turns his lens upon his own family's experiences immigrating ... read more read more...to the United States in the aptly titled In America. The loosely autobiographical script centers on Johnny (Paddy Considine), a young actor sneaking his wife, Sarah (Samantha Morton), and daughters, Christy and Ariel (real-life sisters Sarah and Emma Bolger, respectively), over the Canadian border in the hopes of jump-starting his career in New York City. They soon find that America is not the land of boundless opportunity, however, as they move into a dank, dilapidated apartment building populated by drug dealers, transients, and thugs. Johnny doesn't snag auditions as easily as he may have hoped, and he and Sarah are forced to take meager jobs after spending their savings on food, rent, and utilities. Still in grief over the untimely death of their toddler son back in Ireland, the couple find their relationship further strained by the pressures of life in the city. Little by little, however, things begin to look up for the fiercely protective family unit, especially when they befriend an eccentric artist neighbor named Mateo (Djimon Hounsou). In America saw its world premiere at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival and played to enthusiastic crowds at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival before its theatrical release in the fall of that year. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

Great child actors, and the rest of the cast are obviously good, but the cheap stupid melodrama of the script will kill your brain cells faster than a bottle of cheap vodka.

Jim Sheridan is an absolute prince at directing little kids. When it comes to adults, though, he falls a little short. What the heck, Djimon Hounsou?

Soulful drama, about an Irish family of four who leaves everything behind to start a new life in America. A wonderfully acted and seamlessly edited story, about love, hope and every-day survival. Much of its charm and appeal though, is owed to the daughters in the family. They're... read more funny, lovely and naturally born actresses. A film that really has you rooting for the success of its characters, and leaves no heart unaffected by the end of the journey.

Director Jim Sheridan wrote this poignant family drama with his two daughters, based on his own experiences. The result is an eerily well-acted, funny, affectionate and sometimes unbearably suspenseful drama about an Irish couple (Samantha Morton, Paddy Considine) and their daugh... read moreters: 10-year-old Christy (Sarah Bolger) and six-year-old (Emma Bolger). Sheridan's subtle directing showcases the knock-out cast, notably Djimon Hounsou as a neighbour. I was surprised at the brilliant performances of the talented Bolger sisters.

One of the most unapreciated films that I've seen in a long while. Mainly because that the plot will feel very "familar" to a lot of people, who are then wil be unable to see just how superb this film really is. What's so special about it is that Sheridan takes what could be a ve... read morery slushy predictable film and make it into such an organic tale of situations which we can all relate to.It's not just a tale of family ties, it's a lot more to that. Sheridan brings much more life into the film which makes it so much more real. Doesn't feel forced and you can relate to each and every character. By the end of the film you feel as a viewer that you've got something out of it. Close to perfection for me.

    Highly recomended.

At first impressions this film seemed to be quite slow moving and didn't seem to be heading in any particular direction, however as the storyline progresses you become emotionally involved with the intense performances by the whole cast.

Paddy of course is my favourite British... read more actor and is the master of versitility, Samantha Morton, probably one of England's best actresses, but the person who really stood out in this film for me and has in other films recently is Djimon Housou. I can also not pass the opportunity to priase the two girls in this film who really showed great acting skills.

Directed by Jim Sheridan and based on events in his life, the extra features make interesting viewing and are worth taking a look.

Movie about an Irish family who move to America after the death of a son/ brother. It is hard to believe the kids are so sweet and well behaved!
  • December 9, 2007
Wonderful ensemble piece looking at how family members cope with grief.
  • November 3, 2007
You must not have a soul if you didn't cry at the end of this movie.
  • September 25, 2007
I'm partial to Djimon Hounsou, but I learned that he alone is not reason enough to give a movie a 4 star rating... meaning that this film has a lot of other good stuff in it, too.

The result is a blend of kitchen-sink and magical realism: sentimental, but well acted and freshly observed. Full Review

In America may not be great, but it's sweet and deeply human, and it demonstrates that when someone speaks from the heart, it can be next to impossible not to listen -- and to feel.

Jim Sheridan's In America doesn't just tear at the heart strings. It rips them out, cuts them up, sets the pieces on fire and pours cold water on the ashes. Full Review
