Twenty thousand years ago, the Earth is overrun by freezing temperatures in an Ice Age that is sending all manner of critters scattering in the path of encroaching glaciers. When a lost human infant is discovered, an unlikely quartet of misfits forms to return it to its mother: Manny, a depressed woolly mammoth (Ray Romano); Sid, a fast-talking sloth (John Leguizamo); an acorn-crazed squirrel named Scrat (Wedge); and the devilish saber-toothed tiger named Diego (Denis Leary). Before they can complete their mission, the reluctant compatriots will brave pits of boiling lava, dangerous caverns of ice, and even a traitorous plot within their midst. Ice Age (2002) also features the voices of Jack Black, Jane Krakowski, and Goran Visnjic. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Ice Age isn't anything you've never seen before but it has memorable characters and enough comic spunk to entertain the whole family. The CGI is really crisp and detailed and is more colourful than more recent animated films.

Let's start with my favorite animated movie quote, shall we? Sid: "From now on, you shall refer to me only as 'Lord of the Flames'." Manny: "Hey, 'Lord of the Flames'--your tail's on fire." ICE AGE is like SHREK in a frozen journey, where Manny is Shrek and Sid is Donkey. Scr... read moreat, of all, has come to the franchise's most fame since this brilliant idea for a cute, animated family movie was first conceived in 2002. He is my favorite character of all of them, as he is always a furry, nutty non sequitur, always appearing at the most random times, always in search for his one acorn. Even still, he has been able to hug it for about two seconds (maybe three, if he's lucky), but he always loses it in a silly, humorous fashion. 'Nuff said. ICE AGE is a lovable comedy for the whole family, and it's one of the few family comedies within the last ten years that isn't "scatological jokes galore!" every second. If you haven't seen it, I humbly pity you. Rent it--I don't care if you don't have kids. Rent it for yourself and you'll easily enjoy it on your own.

    I really didn't like it...

I know FX really ran the hell out of this one, but this was a really fun little movie. It's meant to be for families, but it seems more for everybody if you ask me. It's a lot of fun and has a lot of replay value...which is maybe why it's always being repeated on tv. Unfortunatel... read morey, they decided to make sequels. Like the Shrek series, one movie was enough. I don't really care for the sequels and the new characters they added into the mix. I'll just stick with the first one. :)

A very good movie, maybe to dramatic at times for kids, but for older kids I think they'll like it better.

Probably the funniest animation film love the Scrat character! lol

"I don't know about you guys but we are the weirdest herd I've ever seen."

Most of you don't probably know but it was really close that 'Ice Age' wouldn't have been made as it then was made. Fox Animation Studios was shut down after the disasterous "success" of 'Titan A.E' but '... read moreIce Age', which was during that time in pre-production, was seen as a possible hit. It was intended to be done in classical 2D but Blue Sky Studios, who was given the project, wanted to make it with CGI. It would've been such a shame if 'Ice Age' would never been made. It's a classic!

The film starts with one of the most lovable animation characters ever seen on the big screen, Scrat the sabretooth squirrel. Scrat causes an avalanche by trying to hide an acorn and in result he tries to avoid the disaster but fails. In the continuing scene, we are introduced to the main characters, Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth and Diego the sabretooth tiger. This film had me by now.

Humans are shown early on in the movie in a scene were sabretooth's attack their village. The village chief's wife escapes, barely. As her final act, she gives her child to Manny, who accidently comes to the scene. The duo of Manny and Sid attempt to get the kid back to the humans and they get aid from Diego, who has his own intentions with the kid...

This film is simply wonderful. The story is simple yet very functional with lots of humor. The odd bunch of mammals journey to get the kid back result in several funny scenes, for example the one with the rhino's, the dumb dodo's and basically... themselves. Along the way, parts of the characters past are shown, giving some precious depth to the characters. Manny is clearly the main character of 'em all but Sid and the important subcharacter Scrat, are the ones who are the funny ones.

The animation is still, 8 years later, top-notch. Clearly the technology has gotten better but there is a lot of detail in the characters, like their furs. In comparison with newer animations, 'Ice Age' has nothing to be "ashamed" of. This film is a feast for the eyes.

The voice actors have been cast wonderfully. Ray Romano as Manny is kinda "sad" in his own role. The mammoth has lost his family and thinks that he is the only one left of his species. Romano excels in the part as the sarcastic loner. John Leguizamo is superb as Sid. There's so many lines that could be quoted by him and the way he simply looks and acts is funny as hell. Leguizamo proves that he is a versatile actor, if you compare his works in live features and this one. Denis Leary, who is in my opinion one of the funniest guys alive, is kinda left alone. The potential is not totally used as bits of Leary's charisma and wit is shown rarely. Jack Black does a small part as a dumb and dumber sabretooth, a couple of years before his breakthrough.

'Ice Age' comes highly recommended to all, no matter the age. It doesn't matter if you watch this movie alone or with friends and family. It gives so much pleasure with it's off-beat bunch of quirky figures. And as a reminder, Scrat is a legend by now...

In all, we get a visually crisp, though generally tame, offering.

Real Ice Ages were no jokes. They lasted about 100,000 years and froze most life on the planet. But as long as Leguizamo's Sid and Wedge's Scrat are on screen, this one warms you with laughter. Full Review
