Very minor Mario Bava. It's basically an old-fashioned western revenge plot re-imagined as a Viking adventure. It's remarkable only for the unusual relationships of the central characters; a Hollywood movie of the same era would certainly not expect us to sympathise with a rapist!

I wasn't blown away by Knives of the Avenger but it picked up for the last act. A majority of the action took place outdoors, which doesn't lend well for Bava's signature lighting. Still, it's a lot better than Bava's later work, but don't knock yourself out looking for an out of... read more

This film just never grabbed me. There's nothing wrong with how it's filmed, and I suppose it might've been exciting for the time period in which it was released, but being that I'm not a fan of the adventure genre, I just couldn't get into this one.

I love the novelty of watching swarthy Italians playing fair Nordic types. It actually plays as a pretty good western, right down to the showdown (with knives, not guns).
