Closer to the comic than the movies but it feels more like a bad episode of the Real Ghostbusters.

Even more enjoyable than the last Hellboy animated encounter. This time adding Hurt's Professor Broom and further establishing their own continuity adds a more heartfelt undertone to all the proceedings. It's sad that some of these ideas wont be seen in live action as their are some wonderful ideas that I would love to see Del Toro interpret. Again this is one for the fans who want to see an extra Hellboy adventure as I doubt it will appeal to the skeptics.

The stories of Mike Mignola never get old and neither does seeing Hellboy animated. Blood and Iron is one of those animations that is geared more towards adults as it has a dark feel to it. This isn't rated R, but it sure as h*** isn't rated G.

As usual the story for t

... read morehis Hellboy adventure rides high on science fiction and that is what makes this series so entertaining. Blood and Iron focuses way more on story rather than the action. The run time is only 75 minutes and the action doesn't happen until 2/3 of the way in. Fortunately, the first 2/3 of the film is still good. The story jumps back and forth between the past and the present multiple times. What makes this even more interesting is that the scenes that take place in the past appear in reverse order, going back further and further in time with each new scene.

You do have to wait a while for the action, but you will get your fill at the end. Abe Sapien gets in on a bunch of the fights and Liz Sherman gets a chance to use her pyrokinesis to take down some baddies. Hellboy has the most intense fight when he battles the goddess Hecate. This is one fight that deserves to be in live action.

Once again the original actors, Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, and John Hurt, return to do the voices for their respective characters. John Hurt has a big role as Professor Broom, while Peri Gilpin only has a few minutes with BPRD agent Kate Corrigan

This is definitely another good watch for Hellboy fans. "Destiny is overrated!"

Hellboy: Destiny is overrated!

The second animated feature about the comic character Hellboy actually succeeds at being even better than the first. It's darker, better voiced, and overall more entertaining.

This time, Hellboy and his team head to a haunted house, which is occu... read morepied by among other things, a vampire with history with one of Hellboy's team members, Prof. Bloom, who fought the creature years ago.

[Erzsebet confronts Broom after 60 years - he an old man, she a dessicated, skeletal vampire]
Erzsebet Ondrushko: The years have not been kind to you.
Professor Trevor 'Broom' Bruttenholm: Nor you.
[she strikes him to the ground]
Erzsebet Ondrushko: So frail. Time has turned you to glass. I pity you.
Professor Trevor 'Broom' Bruttenholm: And I you. Growing old is not the worst fate that can befall a person... but you ceased to a be a person long ago.

The team must deal with this creature, as well as the goddess Hectate, who challenges Hellboy's role in society vs. his true nature.

There is also a very well crafted series of flashbacks that work in the way they are presented.

Once again, Ron Perlman is great in his role, but the other actors step up this time around as well. Selma Blair, who has been pretty passive, works very well here. John Hurt is also a welcome addition, really embracing his role in this story.

As mentioned, this flick is very dark as well. One of the main things I like about these animated Hellboy films is that its not tailor made for kids, there is a lot of blood in this one, as well as more natural dialog, that involves swearing and obscure jokes.

The action is also great. A battle near the end goes on and on, while remaining fun and well animated. Very good follow up flick and good preparation for the upcoming live-action sequel.

Hellboy: Hecate, seen your statue - aren't you missing a couple of heads?
Hecate: Why do you walk this lesser world? Mortals they don't know you. We are greater beings than they could ever dream!"
Hellboy: Yeah, well I'm doing just fine. Now ah, I'm kinda busy - I gotta go...
Hecate: Why, to save them? They're nothing to us! Only a few remain that observe the old rituals so I give them back the priestess and they give me sacrifices of blood. Now accept what you are and come and walk with me!
Hellboy: Lady, I was going to cut you some slack because you're a major mythological figure - but that? That's crazy talk. Now leave me alone!

"Hellboy: Blood and Iron" is an entertaining animated film that is hampered by too many flashbacks. The first one tells everything we need to know; the rest just pad out the running time and interrupt the flow of the action. When things go bump in the night, it is best to keep it as simple as possible.

Far superior to its stablemate, Sword of Storms, this animated film has some genuinely creepy moments and makes you care about the characters a lot more. The end is the only real let-down as it suffers greatly from the "let's do bigger is better just because we can" syndrome.

Until Del Toro stops messing about in Middle Earth and gets back to finishing his trilogy, these animated movies are the closest anyone will get to another Hellboy film.. The cast remains - which helps, and there's certainly no skimping on the blood, ghosts and other things that ... read morego bump in the night. It may be a cartoon, but it's not for children. The makers have stayed true to Mignola's original artwork too. Sadly, the plot is dull, and is aimed at children. But if you can see past that this is an alright mini-spin-off-adventure-thing.

I don't know why it took me so long to watch these! Great animated film with the film's stars as voice actors (I can't separate Perlman's voice from Red, anyway) with all the feel of a fun Saturday morning cartoon, but a little more substance to make it interesting. Pretty decent... read more animation as well though perhaps lacking in a Mignola or del Toro-esque atmosphere.

Fun, solid story and the visuals were arresting. Having the same people voice this as the films is a nice touch.

I am not the biggest Hellboy fan, but I really enjoyed this. For a cartoon, it was just spooky enough. I have only one question. Why were Hellboy's legs so thin? It was as if he was walking around on two red toothpicks.
