Adapted from the novel by James Herbert, this subtle, melancholy British chiller owes a great deal to Henry James's The Turn of the Screw. The story opens with a chilling prologue in 1905 England, in ... read more read more...which a young boy fails to prevent the accidental drowning of his sister. As a young man, David (Aidan Quinn) is still tormented by guilt and remorse. After several years in the United States, David returns to England to continue his work researching and debunking claims of the supernatural. His latest investigation into the alleged haunting of Edbrook Manor -- at the behest of the Marriell's family nanny, Tess (Anna Massey) -- introduces him to the eccentric company of the lovely Christina Mariell (Kate Beckinsale) and her brothers Robert and Simon (Anthony Andrews and Alex Lowe). Despite repeated warnings from Tess that mischievous spirits are at work, David refuses to concede that the house is haunted -- until the angelic vision of his drowned sister reveals the true nature of his strange hosts. The rich period setting lends a classy Merchant Ivory touch to the film, and the high production values indicate the guiding hand of executive producer Francis Ford Coppola, but the performances are a bit too cold and detached to provide any legitimate tension. Fans of the classic 1961 film The Innocents will not find the central mystery particularly challenging. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

At no point was I un-entertained, so I guess that's good. Nothing scary, in fact I found it in the Drama section (even though it has everything to do with ghosts). I was surprised to see Kate Beckinsale show skin...must have been one of her first movies or something.

    Hmmm...

This film has a lot of charm which is caused in the main by the presence of Kate Beckinsale.

What makes a great ghost story? Its ability to send shivers down your spine and make you want to sleep with the lights on. The Haunting (1963) is a great ghost story. The Haunted is a good ghost story. The story itself is interesting, despite having some flaws. The frights a... read morere too few and manages to elicit only a few goosebumps. Quinn plays a guy who has lost his twin sister in a horrible accident at such a young age. Fast forward many years, and he is now a psych. professor who is a skeptic of all things supernatural and goes around debunking frauds. He finally learns that ghosts may really exist, and he is in jeopardy. There are a few special effects that appear quite cheesy, especially toward the end. Overall, a relatively unknown (at least, I've never heard of it prior to catching it on Encore) film worth seeing if you enjoy ghost stories, but you will be able to sleep well afterwards.

Who can't resist a good haunting? Excellent in the way they did it.

Effective ghost story. Aidan Quinn does his thousand mile stare many times (his green eyes are beautiful). This is the creepy kind of ghost story, not the slash or goo kind.

Not bad. Really not bad. Quite interesting and stylish. I love the time period, the gothic charm, and the very old fashioned ghost story with some neat twists and turns. Granted my heart does have a soft spot for Mr. Quinn who looks absolutely smashing in the period clothes but r... read moreeally not a bad little flick.

I mean, it's not perfect. If you think about it too hard it has some holes but a really awesome third act will actually have your heart racing a bit. Kate Beckinsale is a little meh (and they show her boobs. A LOT.) but not to the point of destroying the flick. All in all I really recommend this one.

Found this movie at a yard sale. It started off with potential but with the obvious low budget ghostly special effects and not so great conclusion, it plummeted. Had a bit of 1408 meets The Others feel to it but with less entertainment.

For fans of Kate Beckinsale the movie "Haunted" is certainly a guilty pleasure - why guilty, not because it's a bad movie but simply because the young British actress has more nudity in this picture than in all her other movies combined.
Two years prior to this movie Beckinsale... read more has her first topless scene in the movie "Uncovered," and here she throws all caution to the wind - along with most of her clothes. It's a somewhat uncharacteristically scary movie from Lewis Gilbert, the man who gave us some of the silliest James Bond movies such as "You Only Live Twice" and "Moonraker."
In this 1996 movie the ever-watchable Aidan Quinn plays Dr. Ash, a skeptic who accepts the invitation to investigate supernatural goings-on at a creepy country estate. Once there he begins to witness some unexplainable occurrences and for those of you looking for a twist in the end of your stories - this one has a doozey. Not to give too much away, but nothing is quite as it seems and this one gives they yet-to-be-made "Sixth Sense" a run for its money in more ways than one.
Adapted from the James Herbert novel this movie is probably one of my all-time favorite haunted house tales and joining Quinn and Beckinsale are the likes of Anthony Andrews, Anna Massey and John Gielgud (in what is essentially an extended cameo). It's a brilliant gothic tale with plenty to recommend about it. I saw it with my roomies, who are all horror-movie aficionado's and they all agreed it was a good show.
Is this movie scary - yes, does it thrill - yes it does that too. Is it a good purchase - yes, and if you are a Beckinsale fan it's a definite must for your collection.
