Unlike many tales about gangster's returning home, this has little to do with revenge and how things have changed. It focuses more on the redemption, forgiveness and atoning for ones sins. This makes it an inspirational tale that doesn't glamorise the gangster lifestyle. It shows... read more the respect that can come with not fighting and earning a hard days pay. The violence is sparse but always brutal without being graphic. It is whom the violence happens to that makes it shocking. Like the best of Scorsese's works, a thousand gangsters can be killed without us batting an eyelid. But when the film takes the time and effort to humanise and empathise with characters, then even the slightest bit of violence towards them can be upsetting. The climax is wonderful and conveys bright hope for some and damnation for others. Sunflowers is a film with heart, brains, entertainment and artistic merits.

Usually I don't go for movies about sublimated machismo, but the story here is engaging and the 'family' relationship is a lot of fun. In-jae Heo is surprisingly good in bringing a heartfelt character to life. This film is touching and sweet until the big fight at the end. I didn... read more't completely hate it though because it was done in a fantasy sort of way. Good movie.

    **Minor Spoilers Ahead...**

This film starts out pretty standard (good, but standard) and then transitions into something much deeper and then simply gives up and turns into a gangster brawl... or maybe the entire movie was a backdrop for a gangster brawl. Either way, it's still... read more a pretty good film.

Basic story is bordering cliche - a guy gets out of prison after 10 years... leaving behind his former life as a feared gang leader. He goes 'home' to his 'mother' and 'sister' who own a small restaurant (that never has any patrons, yet they seem reluctant to part with the seemingly failing business) and finds himself in the middle of a turf war as the local gang wants the land so they can build a nightclub - the cliche being that the only remaining piece of land they need to complete the real estate deal is this little old lady's restaurant... it's hackneyed, but they somehow make it compelling if not fresh.

The characters are endearing and captivating. I was crying while watching this - numerous times... then again, I cry fairly easily.

Good stuff - not the best movie ever, but quite satisfying in spite of some flaws.
