Some interesting sets, crazy action scenes (the reined-women-pulling-chariots chase!?), and an army of thong-wearing, armor-and-leather clad ladies during the final 40 minutes add an extra half star of original eye candy.

  This was one of many movies that came out after Raiders of The Lost Ark in order to take advantage of the adventure movie craze. This was a French film based on an English 1950's underground comic book. The actors spoke English but they still dubbed the voices and they did it b... read moreadly. The French version probably didn't have the mouths movie in synch with the words but why was the English version out of synch. The only good thing about this movie was the topless actress. The story was stupid. The dialog was stupid. The plot was stupid. The story and plot was stolen from every previous adventure movie from Tarzan to Indiana Jones. The comic book was full of female bondage, but the movie has none. There was just a lot of sexy armor on the women warriors in the lost city of women. The director tried to make the movie funny but the jokes were just stupid. Gwendoline in the comic book was blond but in this movie she is a red head. Although in the beginning of the movie the Chinese gangsters said she was blond. It was supposed to be set in China but when they go inland they go into an unexplored jungle then desert then back to a jungle then finally a desert. There are no jungles in China and China has been a highly populated civilized country for 5000 years. There is no place on earth were you can walk from jungle to desert to jungle and back to desert. I went to see this movie at the Heritage Park Mall Theater in Midwest City, Ok. It was the edited U.S. version. Now I have the unedited and unrated director's cut on DVD. It was based on the original French version. There's not a single memorable line in the whole movie. It's a must see if you are in to bad movies.

  French director Jaeckin, best known for the soft-erotica masterpiece "Emmanuelle," presents his lukewarm, artsy soft-spin on BDSM. Loosely draws on 1950s bondage-themed comicbook character Sweet Gwendoline, created by fetish artist/photographer John Willie.
  
  Jaeckin, attempting t... read moreo market himself as director of humor/adventure, split the film into two neat halves. The first half plays ho-hum, as fourth-rate, Southeast Asian-themed knock-off of "King Solomon's Mines" (the MacGuffin is an exotic butterfly): lousy jokes, cheesy blood/gore, boring topless shots - and subtle cycles of bondage/imprisonment & release. Shoddy set-pieces, uninteresting cinematography, irrelevant plot means fast-forwarders miss nothing.
  
  Then, at mid-point, when Kitaen, her guide (Huff) and French-maid-in-tow (Zabou) release/escape into a futuristic art-deco industrial palace - populated by Amazonians strutting skimpy, skintight-strapped black leather garb - that butterfly is all but forgotten and the BDSM theme takes full charge of the film's second half.
  
  The palace odyssey is nothing but endless teasing through ornate leather costuming, fantasy devices of torture/bondage, blood-drawing catfights, gratuitous full-frontals, chariots drawn by yoked-and-whipped leathered-up women - and a meaningless, confusing plotline.
  
  Finally Kitaen, donning a spiked leather cowl and massively-wide Asian-shouldered black cape, takes her thoroughly tied-down Huff. Then grab that butterfly and run. Fin.
  
  "Gwendoline" and Kitaen miss wide delivering the quality of "Emmanuelle" and Sylvia Kristel. To be fair, many actresses have tried duplicating Kristel's boundary-pushing erotic innocence via the Emmanuelle brand ? and all have failed.
  
  Second-half costuming is visually interesting, as in fantasy films like "Dune" and "Star Wars;" so are second-half set-pieces.
  
  Transfer is good; extras include Jaeckin commentary/interview.
  
  RECOMMENDATION: Better viewed as camp curiosity - than as an actual erotic vehicle.

  Campy good fun with sexy Tawny Kitaen baring a great deal! It's a dream come true for fans who saw her on the Whitesnake video and I always liked her as Kevin Sorbo's wife in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. It knows it's campy, therefore it's fun.
