After the marriage, the couple doesn't live together, but when the government's Immigration agents begin to investigate the pair, they are forced to put up a charade to convince the authorities that they are truly in love. Of course, the charade eventually becomes reality. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

A French man marries a US stranger to get a green card. Good cast.

Unconvincing, unfunny and completely devoid of charm. Even by Hollywood rom-com standards.

a charmingly funny and enjoyable comedy that is entirley irresistable, entertaining, and has lots of fun. A+

The movie was directed by Australian Peter Weir, who tailored the role of Georges Faure to French actor Gerard Depardieu, his first English-language film, with ex-model Andie MacDowell who began building a film career for herself from the mid-1980's on.

MacDowell plays the Ne... read morew York biologist Bronte Parrish who is determined to rent a delightful, old apartment that is reserved for married couples only. Depardieu, whose portrayal of French composer Faure, applies for a Green Card to allow him to work in the United States. To put it bluntly, he needs to marry an American to get legal residency. Hence, an arranged wedding between Bronte and Georges swiftly ensue, although they still want to go their separate ways. The couple come to the attention of the Immigration Authorities, however, and so now feel obliged to live together, which cause all sorts of complications.

To prepare for inquisitorial interviews, the two of them concoct a shared past, tell each other about their childhood and place holiday photos around the apartment. They fall in love to each other, although he is eventually deported.

A happy ending is merely postponed but not cancelled.

Really cute and I really like that they use real life questions for the citizenship test.

Like I always say, I hate romantic comedies/romance movies and so generally expect rubbish. I enjoyed this though, much to my surprise. Someone on the IMDb forum said that the only people who like this think that Gerard Depardieu is attractive, so I would like to point out to thi... read mores probably 15 year old, that I think both he and Andie McDowell are ugly and extremely annoying. Especially Andie McDowell, she seriously pees me off.

I thought once during the film "didn't they produce films like this"?I was right some weeks later when Accidental Tourist came in.OK,it's an alternative story than Kasdan's previous film,I admit it though,I only saw it for Weir's sake. It's simply irrational the fact he gave up th... read moree vision in his head to embark on a...romantic comedy.Sure,it was good up to a point,Depardieu on his last great roles, the tackiness was obviously there and it's for no reason a Meg Ryan stupid flick or sappy bubblegum but the idea didn't evolve.

    Great movie.

Sweet and gentle but not sickly so - a superior film of its genre.

Amusing comedy with a charming lead (Gerard Depardieu) and Andie MacDowell, who always seems to play women who are very difficult to like.

The story could have been turned into a plastic sitcom, but ... the crackling chemistry between Depardieu and MacDowell gives it considerable charm. Full Review
