Found this one very similar to another Korean movie 'R-Point', though this film is more gory than scary. Set in modern day South Korea in an outpost on the border with the hostile north where all soldiers manning the guard post except one are found massacred and it's down to a mi... read morelitary investigative team to find out what happend. Cue lots of flashbacks with the story jumping from past to present - that left me a little lost. Creepy at times and bloody at others with a psychological threat that keeps you wondering who's good and bad. The film is a little too long at 2 hours though. But I stayed the distance and thought it was a very decent effort.

It gets the gloomy atmosphere and slow build up right. Only to keep the slow build up going without any pay-off. The narrative is also a mess as it jumps back and forth between the past and present. Why both stories had to be shown is beyond me. The same thing happens to the seco... read morend lot as it does the first. Typical soldiers turning against each other with characters simplified and easy to handle on screen. Nothing new, nothing interesting, just watch the superior and similar R-Point.

A lot of places will classify G.P. 506 as a horror because of the plot that deals with a virus that changes people into violent zombie-ish things. Where have we heard this one before? Anyway, this film plays out more like a murder mystery rather than a horror.

    At two h

... read moreours this film goes by rather slowly because it actually takes the times to build up the story and characters. This is where this picture is better than other virus films. People that are expecting to see a lot of action and zombie killings should stay away from this one. This is not Resident Evil or Dawn of the Dead. There are a good number of killings, but not in the manner that you are probably thinking.

The storytelling is pretty effective as it uses flashbacks at crucial intervals to help unfold the story. The film starts with a slaughter at guard post 506 and the next two hours, which is a tad long, is just an uncovering of what happens. Eventually you get to the ending, which is pretty good.

The makeup is well done. Every time an infected soldier is on screen you become itchy. The bodies are bloodied up as well. It shouldn't make you squeamish though. The scares aren't big and this is because this movie avoids the cheap stuff where things pop out and the loud music hits. Instead the film uses the atmosphere and setting for the experience.

Cheon Ho Jin does a nice job at leading this picture and Cho Hyun Jae pretty much steals the show as the 2ng biggest character.

G.P. 506 may not be an action packed zombie fest, but it is a worthy film out of Korea.
