After wiping out a disco with its toxic secretions (from the monster, not the music), Hedora goes airborne and attacks Mount Fuji, where blasts of electricity and Godzilla's atomic breath finally burn it to a crisp. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Imagine putting 70's psychedelic, kiddie antics, eco-thriller, horror, surreal art-house, and Godzilla into a blender. After mixing these things in the blender, you end up getting Godzilla vs. Hedorah aka Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster. This Godzilla outing is one of the weirdes... read moret entries in the series, but it is also one of the better entries of the Showa era. Just like the first film were Godzilla provided social commentary on nuclear weapons, "Godzilla vs. Hedorah" gives social commentary on pollution and civilization's negative effects on the environment. Godzilla's adversary, Hedorah, feeds off human pollution and waste. One thing I like about this film is it shows people getting hurt or killed during the monster attacks, which gives some weight to the monster destruction. A sympathetic character actually dies (at least, I think he died). The film is full of funk music, cartoon segments, dream sequences, and moments of that are sincerely frightening. The film's eccentricities will either make or break the film for some people, the film is darker but at the same time more fun. Their is something oddly endearing about the film's weird tendencies. It manages to do something different with the Godzilla formula while at the same time remaining faithful to it. The film only has two major drawbacks. The monsters fights are pretty good overall, but sometimes their is too much standing around and waving arms. Godzilla also flies in this movie, which is really silly and cheesy. I laughed a lot during that scene but it could have easily have been left out. People should go into this movie with an open mind and not criticize it on the grounds that it is different from other Godzilla outings. This movie is Godzilla on acid, and whether you love it or hate it, it's an experience you won't easily forget.

After the absurd travesty of the previous installment, Godzilla needed something familiar yet fresh. We got a film that has split many a fan. It brings a dark warning about pollution, as Godzilla's latest foe is created from man's ignorance. As Godzilla arrives to destroy the mon... read morester, should we take this as a suggestion to use nuclear mistakes to clean up current ones? Probably not, as is delightfully portrayed in the stunning opening shots as a young boy plays with a Godzilla action figure. This clearly illustrates his place as a commercial saviour of the world. Hedorah is a great villain. He can change forms, and really causes a lot of damage. His gunk and gas is able to physically deform humans forever. This dark reveal is presented in the opening scenes as a father and son are scarred. The whole film has a bizarre 60's funk thing going for it. Bizarre musical interludes, PSA cartoon segments, and scenes that would fit into an Austin Powers movie. It's darker than some of the previous Godzillas, but it's also a lot more fun at the same time. A nice offering for the series, though the flying segment at the end should have been cut.

Easily one of the better (or simply watchable) of the Godzilla films, Godzilla vs. Hedorah should satisfy anyone whose a fan of guys in rubber suits destroying small model towns. The Hedorah is a smog monster composed of pollution. This gives the film an ecological element and ... read morealso provides one of the better villain monsters. The larval, hoping, flying and standing stages of the creatures development gives the audience several different designs to marvel at (rather than the same one throughout the entire film). The film also benefits from Godzilla's inability to destroy The Hedorah as its poisonous body weakens him. Only with humans help can Godzilla defeat it, giving a strong environment/social collaboration message in the real-life fight against pollution.

Worst movie. The special effects have never been a strong point of the series. Boring scenes were broken up with completely ludicrous and confusing animation sequences which made no sense.

Let's have a party on Mount Fuji! A corny, piece of 70's psychedelic fun.

Another so bad it's awesome Godzilla movie. The Godzilla film all the cool kids like.

SAVE THE EARTH! SAVE THE EARTH! We need to stop polluting our planet or Hedorah will come and turn us all into skeletons and cover us in shit! But then Godzilla will come and save us and everything will be okay.

Yeah, this movie raises far more questions than it should have, e... read moreven for a Showa-era Godzilla film. The fighting is surprisingly brutal though, with Godzilla getting his hand SKELETIZED at one point. Yeesh. Pretty fun, despite how terrible it is.

This is one of the poorer Godzilla movies made. It is dumb in so many ways. Hedorah is a worthy monster & the anti polution message is good.

so hokey and campy it's perfect; the "environmentalist" Godzilla battles the smog monster by using--among other things--KUNG FU !

I'm a big fan of Godzilla, but of all his movies, this one is the absolute worse. It was painful to sit through. Special effects have never been a strong point of the series, but it almost seemed as if Toho Co. didn't care. The movie had nearly as many gaps and holes in the pl... read moreot as "Dragon Wars". Boring scenes were broken up with completely ludicrous and confusing animation sequences which made no sense.
Since it was released in '72, the psychodelic culture was still a fresh memory, and for some reason, the producers decided to incorporate that into the movie also. This detracted from the movie as well.
Both Godzilla and Hedora actually LOOKED like two men in rubber suits fighting. No attempt was made to disguise them any more.
Many scenes were of the actors and/or monsters doing nothing, but sitting and waiting, interminably.
Inconsistency? Has there been another movie when Godzilla has flown?
