One young man's dream takes him on a remarkable journey in this sports-themed drama. Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker) was born in Mexico, and came to California with his family when he was just a boy. One... read more read more... of the few things Santiago brought with him was a love for soccer, and while he holds down two jobs -- working landscaping during the days with his father, Hernan (Tony Plana), and as a busboy at night -- he still dreams of playing the game professionally, and spends his precious spare time with an amateur team in Los Angeles. One day, Santiago is approached by Glen Foy (Stephen Dillane), a part-time scout for powerhouse British team Newcastle United; Glen has seen Santiago play and thinks he has talent, and can get him a tryout with Newcastle if he can make his way to England. While Hernan refuses to help Santiago pay for the trip, his grandmother (Miriam Colon) empties her savings to help him follow his dream. Santiago's first reserve game with the team happens during a typically British rainstorm, with Santiago suffering a mild asthma attack to boot; he doesn't play at his best and is turned away from the team, but he refuses to go home, determined to make good. After striking up a friendship with star kicker Gavin Harris (Alessandro Nivola) and demonstrating his mettle to coach Mal Braithwaite (Gary Lewis), Santiago earns a second chance to show Newcastle United what he can do and make his father proud of him. Goal! was a major international hit, and a sequel was already in production before the film opened in the United States in the spring of 2006. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Most movies about soccer suck. Most movies about rags to riches suck. Most soccer rags to riches movies in the 2000's suck. But "Goal" didn't suck. In fact, it rocked. It had great acting, good emotion, a nice ending. I really enjoyed it, despite how corny and cliche it was.

L... read moreike I mentioned, the worst part about the movie is DEFINATLEY the corniness. It was just so corny and cheesy, I wanted to explode sometimes. Luckilly, it's not as corny as the trailer proclaims. VERY good news considering how horrible the trailer made the movie look.

There is a lot of emotion in this film. If you cry at movies, then you'll cry a LOT at this one. I almost cried, and you're looking at someone who sat through the incredibly violent Ninja Assassin!

The acting wasn't amazing, but it was pretty good. The leads Kuno Becker and Tony Plana did really well. Besides that, I'd give it a 7/10.

The plot twists were without a doubt the best thing about the movie. For a sports movie, there are plenty of them and most are pretty good. One moment, Santiago is at the top of the depth chart, next moment, he might be kicked off the team. It was very enjoyable.

I really liked the ending too. It was sad, but happy at the same time. I'm kind of angry that this got a sequel, because this is a movie that shouldn't really have a sequel The ending felt very conclusive.

I don't want to give this movie a 90%, because it is not really what it deserves and I want to stay as close to the tomato meter as possible. But truthfully, I actually enjoyed it. A LOT.

Great Soccer Movie! This is how sports movie should be, with a tremendous story and fantastic ending!!!

Like millions of kids around the world, Santiago harbors the dream of being a professional footballer. However, living in the Barrios section of Los Angeles, he thinks it is... read more only that--a dream. Until one day an extraordinary turn of events has him trying out for Premiership club Newcastle United.

The poster says it all: "The impossible dream". At best the movie has its moments, like in the beginning when he's struggling in the States and trying to get along with his father.

But when he's moving to England and getting it all in just a month... It's impossible! He has his... read more ups and downs but in the end he meets David Beckham (should've been avoided) and scores the big goal. And gets a contract of course. And falls in love. And will star in the sequel... With David Beckham. (Silent shout of terrible pain)

But if he's in England, why the fuck doesn't he drink a pint of Guinness? Instead he pursues a career at kicking a ball (or trying to) for 90 minutes. As you can see, I'm more of a hockey guy. Football/Soccer ain't my game.

Oh yeah, and the acting is average at best, just like the storyline. Recommended for Premier league fans and all other fans of the sport.

If you don't follow football, or know much about it this is likely to bore you. Has plenty of guest apperances from some top footballers. They try to make it more about living the dream and overcoming hardship to make it appeal to a wider audience. As football films go though it'... read mores as good as could have been expected.

    Awesome! My fave sport movie...
  • November 5, 2011
I like movies about sports and I watched this first instalment of a trilogy named "Goal!" few days ago. I knew that it was made with full cooperation from FIFA, and actual teams and players are used throughout the film... but that was the reason for me being so disappointed after... read more watching it... expectations were too high!

Nothing special about the story of Santiago Muñez... a son of a gardener who lives in the Barrio section of Los Angeles who illegally entered the USA - works as a bus boy in a Chinese restaurant and his ultimate dream is to play soccer professionally. Of course, due to his poor life and the fact that he plays solely for a local club he feels it is unlikely. His luck changes when his skills are noticed by Glen Foy, a former Newcastle United player and scout who manages to get him a tryout with Newcastle United...

Predictable, with some action on the football field, and probably enjoyment for the Newcastle fans! I am not sure that I am great fan of bellow average acting and melodrama out of its place... I'll skip the other instalments.

A watchable sports drama, identical to all others previously watched.
  • August 3, 2007
This movie kept me to the edge of my seat, i loved it.
  • November 7, 2006
The film seems to marinade itself in minimal exertion from beginning to end.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Full of the classic cliches of course but very watchable.

The pro-soccer circuit is convincingly portrayed, and at its best moments the dialogue is as bright as Newcastle's skies aren't.
