Sweet cartoon tale based (obviously) on William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Blue Gnomeo and red Juliet are figurines on adjacent lawns of neighbors who despise each other. They meet and fall in love despite the fact that the blue and the red garden gnome families are ... read morenot on friendly terms either. Little known Starz Animation Toronto is responsible for this colorful computer animated comedy. Yes comedy, as liberties have been regrettably taken to lighten up the source play. Additionally, the production lacks the detailed facial expressions that usually highlights these productions. All of the gnomes have sort of the same generic features. Their repetitive countenances lack the distinction needed to engage the viewer. The production does feature an impressive array of British talent that includes James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as the lead characters. There's also a plastic garden frog named Nannette, Juliet's best friend, who is a notably goofy side character. But it's ironic that the funniest voice belongs to American wrestler Hulk Hogan as an announcer that commands internet shoppers to purchase the Terrafirminator lawn mower: "It's a weapon of GRASS destruction!" The story could have used more funny bits like that. Regardless, this was a sleeper hit and it's not too hard to see why. Innocent family offering is just pleasant enough to entertain the whole family.

"Gnomeo smashed Tybalt!" I was so tickled by the fact that, despite the rather dark content of the famous story, this film never lets you forget that the characters are garden gnomes. In case you do, there's a terracotta pottery clink that accompanies every high-five or kiss. It'... read mores hard to get invested in the gravity of a situation where pottery characters murder each other by smashing someone. I originally wanted to see this for Jason Statham, who was a stroke of casting genius as a voice actor. Actually, everyone is good in this, and I for one am more than willing to forgive the huge liberties that the story takes. The departures from the text are many and massive, including the tragic end. I guess that tragedies and children's film don't really go together.

The funniest joke of the entire film is probably the witty title. Which i'm sure was the whole reason the movie got made. Because some executive went "hey I have an idea how about we do romeo and juliet but change it to Gnomeo....!"

Ok, I laughed my ass off - don't know if it was simply because I was in the mood for a lighthearted farcical romp through the Bard's canon, or if the silly brilliance of the concept and its zany execution won me over; but win me over it did.

From the outset, where a gnome ente... read morers the stage and states that this is a well-worn story, but this time will be told differently... but first a preamble, which the gnome admits is a bit long and tedious (of course this is old Billy's actual preamble... oh blasphemy!), you know that the filmmakers aren't taking this seriously (nor should they... after all, this is a tale about feuding gnomes fer chrissakes!).

Borrowing heavily from the bard's works in site gags, little asides and just flat out lunacy, the film gave me many a smile and a few laugh out loud moments. Our tale begins with two adjoining townhomes on Verona St. The mailboxes proclaim that the two neighbors are indeed Capulets and Montagues, and the addresses are 2B and... 2B with the international no slash through it (and if you don't get it then god bless you).

The lunacy includes drag racing lawnmowers (and the later purchase of the Turfinnator 5000 - complete with a angry voice over by Hulk Hogan), and Juliet, the Princess, who lives in a castle by a lake... um, make that pond - which has a power switch that turns on a spectacular light show playing to the Tiki Room music from Disneyland (this is a Disney production after all). Throw in a slightly crazy Flamingo, complete with a whacked out South American accent and well, you get the idea. . . and in case you don't, there's a menacing (to gnomes anyway) bulldog named Spot who at one juncture is asked to vacate the premises (ah come on, you get THAT one, don't you?).

The voice-over acting is a joy, as you get Michael Caine as the leader of the "reds", and his counterpart, the "blue" leader, voiced by Maggie Smith. That's enough cinematic royalty right there, but then throw in Jason Strathan, perfectly cast as the growling, street punk gnome Tybolt, and Patrick Stewart as the voice of the Bard's statue, who adds another level of levity as he tells gnomeo that his story sounds eerily like something he once penned. For good measure you have a cowgirl gnome voiced by Dolly Parton (who, in a strange bit of reality, has her own theme park).

It has been noted that Sir Elton John produced this film, and his music is prevalent throughout - I'm commenting simply because it's there, and didn't really effect me one way or the other - some of the altered lyrics worked, while others did not.

I had a really good time here - and yes, the ending was predictable, and at times the plot lagged, but overall this was simply a lot of fun; much more enjoyable than the later Shrek films.

Red Good Gnomes: The story you about to see has been told before. A lot.

"A little adventure goes a lawn way."

Gnomeo and Juliet is a boring retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but this time it is with gnomes. When I first heard about this, I had no desire to see it a... read morend even as I began to watch it, I had no real reason for doing so. I guess I was just curious to see how this turned out. It turned out to be just as excruciating as I thought it would be.

The only things that really saves this movie are a talented voice cast and the music of Elton John. Everything else is unoriginal, animated garbage. Will it entertain kids? Probably, but they can be entertained by socks. As for the parents, I don't think many will enjoy themselves. There's just not much there for adults. The movie is rated G for a reason, with very few inside jokes for adults and even those aren't funny.

Despite being a bad retelling of Romeo and Juliet, it still isn't as hard to watch as that punk version, Romeo + Juliet.

I was astonished that I had so much good memories of this film. It's incredibly cute, and a perfect film for the kiddies. Adults won't find anything memorable, or tasteful about Gnomeo and Juliet, but the kids will surely have a blast. James McAvoy is a surprisingly good voiceove... read morer, while Emily Blunt just fails in giving the audience a voice with shear madness. However, I was quite disappointed with the ending, as it does not follow the true storyline of Romeo and Juliet. Regardless, there is a certain amount of fun had while watching Gnomeo and Juliet, and I'm sure many audiences would agree with me.

I'm not a person who likes Shakespeare's work, which some may find shocking, but I find his work just uninteresting and hard to figure out what the hell is going on, but I found this film Shockingly, and I MEAN SHOCKINGLY good. Sure it isn't the best animated film I've seen, and ... read morethere are a lot of unfunny and stupid jokes, but the animation is nice, the music is well composed, and the characters are interesting and likable (Except the frog), and the pacing and action is actually pretty decent.

The story was nothing original. It was okay but can be boring. I expected it to be better. Some dialogues were really funny.
  • September 10, 2011
There was absolutely nothing original about this movie but it was a pleasant watch nonetheless. It seemed to be there mainly to give the big names something to play with and for Elton John to croon the lives of some animated characters again. This movie just seems like a vehicle for Elton John's music. The love story is real cute though, which is based on Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet. Thats about the only part I found enjoyable. I laughed a few times, but there are way funnier animated movies out there. It seems some... read more movie makers sacrifice quality for propaganda, agenda, or a message. Sadly, the music is largely wasted on the material, as somehow gnomes racing a lawnmower doesn't organically translate to a song about fighting and getting a little action in. Full Review
