At times brutally frank, Vivien spares no detail and no insight when telling Madison what constitutes "womanhood." Though Vivien's insights occasionally wax droll, they more often unveil deep and probing truths about gender identity. Documentarians Maya Gallus and Justine Pimlott film Madison over a period of three years, and observe the subject's family coming to terms with the young woman's shift of gender, as she herself undertakes a long journey -- not only of metamorphosis but of deep introspection.
