Teenager Francie Lawrence (Sandra Dee) is known to her surfing friends as "Gidget" or a "girl midget" (she is kinda on the short side). Unable to compete with the curvaceous bikinied lasses at the loc... read more read more...al beach, Gidget is assured by her understanding parents (Arthur O'Connell, Mary LaRoche) that boys will eventually pay attention to her. Turns out that Mom's right on the money, as surfers Moondoggie (James Darren) and Kahoona (Cliff Robertson) vie for Gidge's attention during the summer of her 16th birthday. Based on the novel by Frederick Kohner (who based the title character on his own daughter), Gidget was one of the surprise hits of 1959. The film spawned a host of theatrical and TV-movie sequels, not to mention the 1966 TV series starring Sally Field -- and the 1987 sitcom starring Caryn Richman. In addition, Gidget boosted the careers of several stars-to-be, including Yvonne Craig, Doug McClure and Tom Laughlin. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie was the beginning of the surfing movie trend of the 60s, I think, and a classic teen film. It's not a great movie, but I liked it anyway.

Good ol' fashion presque-60s superfun. You have to love Sandra Dee, she's the absolute ultimate. It's not an amazing movie but it's a classic. Apparently it's the film the kick started the surf movie craze. What's the best part in the film is twice when James Darren, or "Moondogg... read moreie", busts into the Gidget theme song, which is just the misogynist cherry stuck on the top of the 'traditional values' sunday of this movie. "She may not be king sized but her finger still ring sized/ Gidget is the one for me."

Such a Great Surfer Movie, my Niece named her Dog Gidget after this Movie.I always hoped she'd get a companion Dog & name it Moondoggie too.Hard to believe that Female Surfers were something unusual at that time.A Really Sweet Film for Teens

This is a 1960s beach classic. This is the movie that really ushered in the beach movies of the 1960s and it's actually not too bad. Sandra Dee does a great job in the role, although everything in the movie is sensationalized, of course. The characters really aren't believable... read more, but it doesn't really take away from the overall feel of the film. It's just supposed to be a fun teen romp with a good moral to the story and I think it does that pretty well.

The best of all the Gidget movies, and the television series. Sandra Dee is perfectly cast as the tomboyish teenager. Obviously, the movie is not deep or significant, but it is cute fun. It also started the big trend of beach movies, so popular in the 1960's.

*blink* Goodness. A surfer movie. Haven't seen many of those, actually. I think my parents generally shielded me from them, and this must be why. This movie had like... three seconds of anything actually interesting to watch. The rest of the time I amused myself by laughing at th... read moree whole thing. This is one of my favorite films. It is a typical beach movie for the time, but I just love Sandra Dee.

The first beach film of its kind and one of my all-time favorites. Sandra Dee is probably the best Gidget of the two girls that followed her. It's a cute fluffy movie, not meant to be taken seriously. Enjoyable.

Look her, she's Sandra Dee! Innocent enough '50s romantic comedy doings.
