The film centers upon Charles Gatewood (Jason Patric), the U.S. Cavalry lieutenant who is charged with capturing the elusive Apache leader. Gatewood is torn by a grudging respect for Geronimo and his people and his duty to his country. But then all the white men in the film have a respect for Geronimo, even as they are trying to hunt him down and kill him. General Charles Crook (Gene Hackman), charged with overseeing the forced settlement of the Apaches on reservations, has nothing but admiration for Geronimo. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Geronimo was historically accurate and that they used Apache historians to assist. Geronimo shows alot of war and apaches killing white and mexican.

I can't quite put my finger on what it was about Walter Hill's, Geronimo: An American Legend, that kept this from being an exceptional film. With a cast made up of Wes Studi, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Jason Patric and Matt Damon, beautiful shots of the American Southwest and a... read more fairly accurate interpretation of historical events, it came across as being just an okay flick. Maybe I was a bit disconcerted by some of the utterly horrible headgear...LOL

What really hurt this movie the most is it's title. Since Geronimo isn't in this all that much really. It's more about the men who are tracking him down rather then the man himself. Otherwise this really was a decent movie that has a great combination of up and coming, current an... read mored seasoned actors. A strong director behind it. And a fantastic story told from both sides of the conflict. The scenary and the camera work capturing it is top notch as well. And I have to say this will always be Patric's finest performance. Whether he assumes the role of an ambassador with his deep eyes and charismatic presence or that of a soldier with his masterful horsemanship (performed by the actor himself), he brings a special depth and beauty to this project. I think the reason why this gets over looked so much is because of Dances with Wolves which came out shortly prior to this one. But a damn worthy watch if you ask me.

I don't know the history of Geronimo, but this film was a great story. It saddens me that our government was that back-stabbing.

This is a great western! Very, very underrated. I love the the way they used John Ford like settings and direction on this movie. Great sound effects, scenery, and acting. I can watch it over and over.

I love this movie. Jason Patric was fabulous in this and of course, any movie with Gene Hackman and Robert Duvall should be great.
  • May 23, 2007
I like Wes Studi but this is a project he should have walked away from. A really bad idea with equally horrendous results. Not only do the actors butcher the Apache language they also give the movie a new level of cheesiness that even challenges Costner's film "wolves". Also, ... read moreI don't remember Geronimo roaming Utah prevalently as he did in the film - really bad location scouting for a "historical" film. Though the photography alone was beautiful. That doesn't save this film from being crap though.

Walter Hill takes another stab at the western in this fitfully powerful story about Apache leader Geronimo. The pacing is somewhat lax, but Wes Studi makes for a compelling lead, and Hill's movie ultimately refuses to provide a clear-cut conflict between good guys and bad guys...... read more which is probably why it didn't do so well at the box office.

I was in this movie when I was like 8 years old, it was fun meeting all the actors, and yes I got to meet Wes Studi, he is as amazing in person as on screen.

Visually, action director Hill may be paying tribute to Ford's Westerns in the way he positions the chase and fight scenes against the panormaic vistas, but this Geronimo is curiously bland, neither a... Full Review

A gorgeously shot, fair-minded Western that honors Geronimo and the Apaches, but doesn't demonize the U.S. Cavalry. Vastly underrated and far superior to Dances With Wolves.
