Second-billed Marilyn Monroe is the blonde in question in this second film version of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: Miss Lorelei Lee, whose philosophy is "diamonds are a girl's best friend." Together with... read more read more... her best human friend Dorothy (top-billed Jane Russell), showgirl Lorelei embarks upon a boat trip to Paris, where she intends to marry millionaire Gus Esmond (Tommy Noonan). En route, the girls are bedeviled by private detective Malone (Elliot Reid), hired by Esmond's father (Taylor Holmes) to make certain that Lorelei isn't just another gold-digger. When Dorothy falls in love with the poverty-stricken Malone, Lorelei decides to find her pal a wealthier potential husband, and that's how she gets mixed up with flirtatious diamond merchant Sir Francis Beekman (Charles Coburn) and precocious youngster Henry Spofford III (George "Foghorn" Winslow). Most of the Leo Robin-Jule Styne songs from the Broadway show remain intact, including Marilyn Monroe's rendition of "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," a production number later imitated by pop icon Madonna. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An enjoyable mix of best friends who want very opposite things from potential husbands. For me, Jane Russell stole the spotlight in this film, whilst Marilyn was much more over the top.

As a Musical it's very forgettable, but otherwise it made for easy watching.

A pretty good movie, it's almost exactly like How to Marry a Millionaire, but it's slightly better, mostly because it's funnier.

Mixed feelings on this film. I loved the sassy Jane Russell, in all her boy crazed glory, and the ever fluffy Marilyn Monroe, but there wasn't enough pomp and circumstance. The numbers were lackluster except for the monumental "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." The plot was ske... read moretchy, and the humor up and down. Not the best musical, but still entertaining.

dispite the choppy editing and rediculouness of Monroe This is a great movie! Its a classic and makes me wonder. Was Marilyn Monroe really that dim? It seemed abit too natural to be acting..

As far as musicals go, this is easily my favorite. Howard Hawks brings the perfect blend of comedy, musical numbers and just an honest message. Of course the shining moment is Marilyn Monroe due to the fact that she's just so charismatic and lovable. As opposed to most musicals i... read more've seen, this really makes sense and isn't too overboard. It's a fun story with great visuals and characters you wont forget.

Marilyn being classically Marilyn. Funny how diamonds are a girl's best friend reminded me of Moulin Rouge! Still this is one of the more enjoyable early romance films. I thought it was cute and funny. And LOVE that Technicolor!!!

Not much going for plot, but I liked the glamour in this movie. Marilyn was quite a good actress, it's only the second of her films I have ever seen.

I had no idea what to expect from this one, I have to admit: it's famous for the scene that Madonna and Moulin Rouge ripped off, and for putting Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell (the latter being my preference if you must know) into Hollywood cement.

Monroe's acting was weak - ... read moreyes, this is new to me, it's the first of her movies I've ever seen - but her transition from (1) doe-eyed bombshell available to the highest bidder to (2) gold-digging show girl to (3) all-singing, all-dancing cabaret star was notable.

Though it's watchable (as all movies made before about 1965 seem to be), the problem with this movie is that you just can't buy into the motives of your heroine, and her growth as a character in the end is questionable at best. The resolution is ridiculous, but these two on screen at the time? Who cares a lot? Fun songs, and no, I probably shouldn't beat on movies meant to be senseless vehicles for their stars...
