Funny Lady, the follow-up to the 1968 Funny Girl which made a movie star of Barbra Streisand, picks up the character of Fanny Brice in the 1930s. Although she is a tremendously famous Broadway star, s... read more read more...he has suffered from the stock market crash and needs to boost her finances. Even Ziegfeld, who soon will pass away, is having a hard time raising money for a show. Into this scene bursts brash young Billy Rose (James Caan), an egotistical lyricist with unrestrained ambition. He cajoles and charms Fanny into linking up with him, convincing him that he can produce a revue that will showcase her to their mutual advantage. Out of town, the show is an unmitigated disaster, and Fanny uses her professional know-how to whip the show into shape. It arrives in New York a hit -- and Fanny and Billy arrive an item. Both of their careers blossom, but even though they marry, their relationship suffers. Fanny still carries a torch for first husband Nick (Omar Sharif), and Billy, partially because of insecurities caused by Fanny's feelings for Nick, has a roving eye. In California working on a lucrative radio show, Fanny and Nick connect again -- and Fanny realizes that she is finally over him. Thrilled, she flies to Cleveland, where Billy is working on a new show, ready to commit herself totally to him -- only to find him in bed with another woman. The two part, but years later they meet again to discuss a new show, and it's clear that the chemistry between them is still there. ~ Craig Butler, Rovi

A much deserved sequel to the first movie :) Barbara again amazes us with her amazing acting & singing skills :) This is another amazing marvel in film history :) James Caan is also incredibly exceptional in this movie as Fanny's love interest :)

Okay sequel to the wonderful Funny Girl is missing several key ingredients that hold it back from the level of the first film. The most important would seem to be director William Wyler, who kept the first film moving even at an extended length this one plods here and there. The ... read moresupporting characters here aren't as enjoyable or fleshed out as in the first, where is Kay Medford's wonderful mother? Most of the music is excellent, the problem with most is the staging. We only get snippets of many of them like "More Than You Know" and "Am I Blue" and several of the ones we do get full versions of are muddled, the worst is "It's Gonna Be a Great Day". Barbra gives a great rendition of the song but it's drowned mostly in long shots and the sound of the shuffling feet of the surrounding dancers. "Let's Hear It For Me" is a blantant ripoff of "Don't Rain on My Parade". There is a haunting version of "If I Love Again" though. Caan is alright as Billy Rose but he and Babs share little chemistry and he mostly shouts his part hardly making the most romantic leading man. As for Streisand, who made this under duress from a contract obligation, she is of course loaded with talent but seems brittle and haughty, two things Fanny Brice never was. The production design is excellent and some of the costumes are eye popping, the feathered dress in itself is amazing, but they are dressing up an average affair. Not a waste of time just don't go into it expecting the high quality of the first film.

"Sequel Smeakwill"I'm just guessing that's what Fanny Brice would Say.Rarely, very rarely, is a Sequel as Good as the Original, but this one is, so rent them in Tandum & have Popcorn & Kleenex at the Ready cause you are in for Laughter & Tears, & That is entertainment!!!

Wow was this movie bad. It tried too hard to be "stage-show"-ish. Most of the musical numbers did not have anything to do with forwarding the story or letting you in on a person's personality, but seemed to just exist for the sake of "we need a number". Yes, the show was suppo... read moresed to be horrible but do we need to WATCH it be horrible completely instead of just snippets?

So instead of a rooting for a girl who has nothing and seeing her become something, we have the same woman, but now is a bitch and wants more, but thinks so lowly of herself she's willing to take a sleazy guy like Caan's character who's so unlikable I don't see how anyone could want to see them work it out. And then Sharif was just plain creepy in this one just standing around trying to get by on looks that are waaay behind him at this point in time.

There was just nothing likable about this one, a complete 180 degree turn from Funny Girl.

This sequel to Funny Girl isn't bad at all. Some great songs and musical numbers. The production quality is excellent, superb costumes, art direction and cinematography. Patches of humor are welcome. It's too long however.

Though not as brilliant as the original, I must admit, the hilarity and wit that is Fanny Brice still rings true in this film. As far as sequels go, this one wasn't too shabby, and whatever you might think, the songs and entertainment are still as great as ever.

"Hardly worth watching" The Original film "Funny Girl" is far superior to this. I don't think they should have made a sequel. I liked Barbara when she was just starting out and this film does not live up to being a sequel. Rather dull and at the time when this came to the box off... read moreice in 1975 "musicals" themselves were not a hit.
  • June 28, 2007
A little bit more depressing than Funny Girl... the talent is still there and some good moments...but not at all a good film.
  • June 10, 2007
Harsher than the original and duller, some of the songs have good observations about life, buried in the muddle of action.
  • May 2, 2007
This came a few years too late behind the original, after musicials had lost popularity at the box office.
