She sets out on a journey to find her own birth mother. Along the way, she meets Ok-Nam, a dedicated, if misguided, mother who prostituted herself in order to raise money to buy her daughter a piano. Yet once her activities were discovered, she was kicked out the house. Later, the two women save Yoo-jin from suicide. A former singer, Yoo-jin is also a cancer patient who had to have her tongue removed.     Flower Island is one of those very quiet films that has a lot to say if you can simply peak beneath the surface. There isn't much dialogue and this allows us to really immerse ourselves in the performances. We can work out the pasts and purpose of each character from their actio... read morens coupled with those few words. Flower Island is also shot beautifully, it is realistic but also feels like an illusion. This is a film to watch by yourself, so you can experience the loneliness of the characters. This is an understated masterpiece.
