Though the original Fletch was drubbed by critics, it proved a major success for star Chevy Chase. It was inevitable, then, that a sequel would make an appearance. Surprisingly, Fletch Lives didn't co... read more read more...me out until 1989--a full five years after the original. Once more, Chase stars as Irwin Maurice "Fletch" Fletcher, the gonzo investigative reporter created by novelist Gregory McDonald. Indulging his penchant for disguises and bizarre aliases, Fletch investigates a deep dark mystery at a crumbling Southern plantation. Various friends and enemies are portrayed con brio by Hal Holbrook, Cleavon Little, Juliane Phillips, Randall "Tex" Cobb, Richard Libertini and Richard Belzer (Chase's cohort from the old Groove Tube days). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Chase's sequel to Fletch is just as good as the first movie, just as funny too. If you're a fan of his, you really should see this movie.

Fletch Lives is the sequel to the 1985 comedy/noirish film starring Chevy Chase as investigative reporter Jane Doe. In Lives Fletch inherits a plantation in Louisiana and quits the reporter game but winds up in the middle of another conspiracy this time involving land speculation... read more, toxic waste, and a Christian amusement park.

Is Fletch Lives better than the original? No, of course not, but it is better than most of the stuff Chevy Chase has been in after it (Christmas Vacation excluded). Chevy is still the wise ass reporter who has a thousand different names and a thousand different comebacks that remain totally oblivious to whomever he's using them on. There the throwaway girl (apparently Fletch uses the same cologne as Roger Moore: women just fall onto him). Hal Holbrook plays Matlock. That's right, just call him Matlock. The real standout is R. Lee Ermey who goes from the legendary performance in Full Metal Jacket to playing a televangelist. And he pulls it off.

The story is Bblah. it's not weak and it's not strong it's just there. Overall Fletch Lives isn't the greatest thing out there, but it isn't the worst. Chevy last shining moment? One of them anyway.

This is not as good as the first one but it's still fun and Chase is great as this character.

Better than the original Fletch movie, with Chevy Chase donning many funny disguises to solve a series of wrong-doings in the richly-flavored old South. I liked his impersonation of a televangelist scammer, and his tribute to "Song of the South".

Not as good as the original, sadly, it just seems to lack that something special that makes the first Fletch seem so effortless. Perhaps the change of setting was a mistake - making Fletch a fish out of water deprives us of the enjoyment of watching him work every situation to hi... read mores advantage and approach everything as though he's encountered it a thousand times. A couple laughs but mostly a disappointment.

Hey Betty, how about lunch at the In N' Out Burger?
    No.
Okay, forget the burger, how about just the In N' Out?
Ok, how about just the In?

Fletch is still funny in round two. If you liked the first one you will probably like this one too. It has several good laughs and funny situations where Fletch is going under cover in wacky disguises that have even more ridiculous names. The case he is pursuing is not as good as... read more the last one and the side characters along the way are not quite as good, but Chevy Chase is as good as ever. Once again he makes the movie with his quick sarcastic comments and a straight-faced levelheaded delivery. This movie is more direct than the first one, which makes it more dependent on its laughs than the content and complexity of the mystery, but it is funny and it works pretty well for a sequel.

Samething I said about the first Fletch movie. If it was anyone else playing Fletch it wouldn't have been a good movie. But Chevy Chase is brillant when it comes to humor like this. I admit, the movie is stupid, but that is wholly what I love about it. Sure, if you want a more re... read morealistic mystery story, watch the first one. But for purely enjoying Chevy Chase's ridiculous antics, this one surpasses it. I can't imagine any other actor who could have pulled this script off and made it anything worthwhile. I think the best part about Chevy Chase as Fletch, is that he lives out those crazy ideas we sometimes get (such as convincing someone of invisible squealing bugs (greatest part of the movie by the way), simply telling someone their house is on fire, and marching into a corporation like you own the place), and he gets away with it when most of us don't dare in the first place. Perhaps the people who can't enjoy him simply don't get the same temptations, and therefore can't see why he appeals to those of us who have to repress the desire to introduce yourself as a famous sixteenth-century astrologer or tell a fellow passenger on an airliner the the pilot looked safe while he parachuted out of the jet.

The mystery is barely there, and nobody really cares, as long as Chase gets to ham it up under a wider array of fake moustaches and silly accents. Full Review

A very disappointing sequel that's not nearly as funny and witty as the original.

Not quite as good as the first, but still an enjoyable jaunt

Too bad, he did. Maybe if he hadn't this sequel won't have been necessary.
