Chevy Chase added a classic comic hero to the film landscape with Fletch, one of his few truly popular star vehicles in a famously misguided post-Saturday Night Live career. Chase plays Irwin M. Fletc... read more read more...her, known to everyone as Fletch, a Los Angeles Lakers-loving investigative reporter with a gleeful disdain for deadlines and a knack for pushing the buttons of his frustrated editor (Richard Libertini). He's also known for donning numerous disguises and assuming zany false identities to help gain information. While pursuing an ongoing story about a powerful drug dealer who operates from Venice Beach, he comes across an intriguing offshoot in which he becomes intimately involved. Aviation executive Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson) has an unusual proposition for Fletch: If Fletch agrees to an elaborate plan to kill him, for reasons Stanwyk refuses to divulge beyond explaining that he has bone cancer, Fletch will walk away with a healthy sum of money and a plane ticket to Brazil. Curious yet suspicious by profession, Fletch begins investigating Stanwyk's true motives, which leads him through numerous misadventures. Among them are a visit to a stuffy country club; a high-speed car chase with an unwitting passenger; repeat encounters with Stanwyk's wife (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson), although she may not be his only one; and a trip to Provo -- that's Utah, not Spain. Inspired by a novel of the same name by Gregory McDonald, Fletch went from thriller to comedy as it was adapted into a vehicle for Chase. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi

Chevy Chase can do better, but at least FLETCH is not as predictable as I expected it to be. It's a smart, funny action-comedy that isn't quite a classic, but it sure is a good, enjoyable laugh-fest. There's clearly much to love here, especially the scene with the "defenseless b... read moreabies" quote--did I just ruin it?

Back in '85 when Chevy Chase was somewhat popular with folks. Looking back he's a bigger clown. Serviceable investigation movie. His disguises are awesome but people should've seen it was him. The basketball player scene was a ripoff because it was only a daydream on TV. The weak... read moreer follower of the Beverly Hills Cop success.

Fletch/Chevy Chase is taking down the bad guys with his brand of cheese and wit. It's funny.

Don't know why I waited so long to see this, it was funny as all get out. I liked it, I liked it a lot. : )

I'm sorry...Chevy Chase is not funny. He was pretty good here...but his face is still there...very chilled out movie.

Fletch is the perfect example of a Chevy Chase movie. For every joke that works, there are about 50 that don't - and even those that work aren't exactly laugh-out-loud funny.
I think everyone can agree his modern career (pretty much the last two decades) is just sad. But even ... read morebefore that, he was terribly hit-and-miss. Some early stuff was good, but after that anything that wasn't a "Vacation" movie was just terribly unfunny. His attempts at physical comedy were never amusing, and even less so when he still tries to do it now days. But this is a review of Fletch, so I'll just leave it at this: If you're like me and you still hadn't watched this movie after 25 years, don't bother. It's just Chevy doing his usual unfunny shtick.

Sorry, I just don't see the appeal. This bored the shit out of me.

A classic comedy with Chevy Chase playing a reporter who investigates a millionnaire's offer to kill him. Chevy is perfect in roles like these, while still on blow and actually taking good, funny parts. What happened? Shoot me, but I still like the sequel a bit better.
