"Fat Man" and "Little Boy" were the nicknames given the atomic bombs that were dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II. This elaborately assembled film is the story of t... read more read more...he events leading up to the dawn of the atomic age. Paul Newman plays General Leslie Groves, a hard-nosed career soldier who in 1942 finds himself the reluctant "nursemaid" to a group of idealistic scientists in Los Alamos, New Mexico. As the military head of the top-secret Manhattan Project, Groves intends to have the operation run by the book--and failing that, to have things his way at all costs. The film's storyline narrows down to a battle of egos between Groves and atomic scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Dwight Schultz), in his own way as contentious and childishly single-purposed as the general. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Its an amateurish disaster. There is no focus and any serious moral posturing that could have been put worth is ruined by oversimplifying the questions and the answers.

As a medical professional, the second half of this movie was really interesting to me. Two of the scientists who worked on this bomb unwittingly became the first cases of acute radiation sickness. Little was known about radiation poisoning before the atomic bomb was dropped on Hi... read moreroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

If you're a history buff this is worth watching once, though might be a bit melodramatic for your tastes. It does feature the great Paul Newman and a decent supporting cast, including John Cusack and the late Natasha Richardson, but I fear a lot of what transpires in this movie w... read moreas fictional, especially the romantic interludes. It seems to me they try to glamorize and sensationalize the atomic bombings of Japan. Trust me, that is something you DO NOT want to do in a film. it's embarrassing and just plain disrespectful of all that died. If there's one thing I HATE about a bad movie is if it leaves me feeling ashamed of Hollywood.

Good cast, but they don't seem to have their hearts in their roles. The period detail is so-so. Too long for it's own good. It really drags in the middle, still, the effort was there and it was an interesting subject matter.

A compelling subject becomes an absolutely boring film. At times, it seems like little more than a schlocky TV movie, and it's anybody's guess why all these stars got on board with the project. The one truly moving plotline involves Kevin Spacey, who becomes the first man to die ... read moreof radiation poisoning - terrifying, heartbreaking stuff, but not really worth the rental.

This movie was so boring and thankfully I had the background information to what was going on. I found that nobody who did couldn't really understand the movie. It is good acting and is fairly accurate when it comes to what really happened, but I could barely make it through th... read moree whole thing.
