In this action thriller, a group of Islamic terrorists, led by Nagi Hassan (David Suchet), highjacks a 747 jetliner with 400 passengers aboard, but Lt. Col. Austin Travis (Steven Seagal), a United Sta... read more read more...tes intelligence agent, is convinced that this isn't an ordinary case of air piracy. His suspicions are soon confirmed; Hassan's men have obtained a large cache of stolen Soviet nerve gas, and they are using the 747 to smuggle the deadly gas into the United States, where they intend to use it to wipe out Washington D.C. and possibly the entire East Coast. As the jet approaches the U. S., engineer Dennis Cahill (Oliver Platt) designs a plan in which a military plane will be able to transfer U.S. soldiers onto the 747 and regain control of the plane and its deadly cargo. However, when Travis dies in the course of the mission, intelligence agent Dr. David Grant (Kurt Russell) is forced to take his place alongside explosives expert Cappy (Joe Morton), commando Rat (John Leguizamo), and stewardess-turned-anti-terrorist Jean (Halle Berry). Executive Decision was the first directorial assignment for veteran film editor Stuart Baird; he cut the film as well. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

One of the first action films I remember seeing where one of the big name leading heroes bites the dust very early on in the film, this was actually quite surprising at the time as you would have never suspected Seagal to die...at least not so early! As it stands this one 'action... read more' in the film gives it real bite above so many others as you really are not so sure what will happen next and who will get blown away.

Obviously Russell won't kick the bucket, that you can put money on but the tension in this film is still feverish as you watch, even after all this time it still holds its own and packs a good solid punch. The plot revolving around Muslim terrorists taking over a passenger airliner with the aim of using it as a weapon of destruction is quite close to the bone these days after all the horrific things that have happened since this film was made, this does make you think and actually makes the film quite haunting and more realistic.

As it goes the film is pretty darn realistic anyway, the special forces unit all proceed in a believeable way, at no point is this film a shoot em up, its actually pretty tight and well thought out. The inner plane sets, aerial shots and bomb sequences all work really well and look good, looking at this film from the posters you would think its a mindless action fest but that is far from the truth, it really is a very good well made thriller.

Add to this a top notch cast with quite a few big names including Platt and Leguizamo in very likeable roles, Berry on ultra cute form and top British thesp David Suchet showing us that he's actually a really good movie actor as well as TV drama star and gives Rickman a run for his money as top well spoken villain.

If there is an example of a highly recommendable suspense thriller, Stuart Baird's Executive Decision is it.

Pushing through the two hour mark, the story behind this film is intriguing to say the least. Aside from a 15 minute story setup, the rest of the picture becomes

... read more one long anticipation of what will happen.

Despite a plot that revolves around terrorists and hijackings, the action is held in check, along with the violence. There isn't much in the way of R-rated material here. Fortunately, the film thrives with the lack of action because of its characters and storyline.

The cast of characters are comprised by a lot of recognizable faces, but no one person takes complete control of the film. Kurt Russell can be depicted as the lead; however, he shares the spotlight with many other faces like John Leguizamo, Halle Berry, and Oliver Platt. Steven Seagal fans are in for a surprise while David Suchet is one fantastic terrorist leader.

In short Executive Decision is a well-rounded picture and is worth many a viewings.

Terrorists vs. the U.S. of A. at 5 miles high as an international flight is hijacked for nefarious ends. Can it be stopped in time? Typical actioner done well with decent performances.

A fun action film, even with Steven Seagall kicking in the bucket within ten minutes.

Kurt Russell is cool even when he's supposed to be a pencil neck with glasses (the glasses are discarded half way into the movie and somehow he has 20/20 vision). This is like Die Hard 2, Air Force One and Speed combined into a super movie. The plot is way more relevant and edgy ... read morenow, considering this has 9/11 written all over it. Surprisingly the villains aren't too stereotypical, but still manage to be diabolical. The supporting cast is all star; including Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, the guy who played Miles Dyson and Steven Seagal (who dies a miserable honor death). It accomplishes everything an action thriller should set out for and has a little bit extra. The action is great, the story is intelligent and the star power is unbeatable.

90's action films commonly featured hijack plots, especially in the air up there. Kurt Russell delivers.
  • September 25, 2009
An Awful cheap action film but worth watching just to see Steven Seagal get knacked! Sorry if that spoilt it for you but that short scene alone is worth sitting through the rest of the garbage, it?s so funny!
  • October 23, 2007
I just remember Kurt Russel killing people. That alone is worth a star.
  • August 10, 2007
Good cast. Good action thriller about a plane hijacking. Similar to Air Force One and Passenger 57.
  • July 14, 2007
Decent cast in a very formulaic thriller that's basically Die Hard on a plane. But I'll give it an extra half star for killing Steven Seagal!

There's nothing like a protracted action drama in which anti-terrorist commandos slink around the bowels of an airborne 747 and talk about what they hope to accomplish upstairs in the final shootout.
