This grim, violent Australian production is an artless mishmash incorporating elements of The Road Warrior, 1984 , and The Most Dangerous Game. The story is set in a dystopian future society where all... read more read more... "deviants" (i.e. anyone whose ideas don't jive with those of the government) are interred in nightmarish re-education camps where they are tortured, beaten, raped and put to death -- mostly on the whim of the psychotic commandant (Michael Craig). Periodically, a handful of particularly defiant inmates will be released unarmed to be hunted down (for the entertainment of the elite) in a free-for-all "Turkey Shoot" (the film's original Australian title). Among the latest batch of potential targets are strong-willed Steve Railsback and Olivia Hussey, who are confronted in the wilderness by the commandant and his goofy mutant cronies -- all of whom carry rocket-launchers, exploding arrows, and flamethrowers. This entire exercise is basically a prolonged excuse for a plethora of cheap, splattery makeup effects, made far more unpleasant by the blatant sadism of the proceedings. Brian Trenchard-Smith is one of the best AUSTRALIAN directors and now comes Turkey Shoot a 1982 thriller set in the future.

Gory as hell and overacted to shit but i love australians and these types of films. Some nicely done sets and story.

Australian made slasher/survival flick. Not so much horror, but has a few gruesome moments during the last 30 minutes. The other hour is fairly uneventful apart from Olivia Hussey's shower scene.

The Aussie's do it again! Another thoroughly awesome and low budget thriller. Although the fight choreographer obviously called in sick, the script is just too bonkers not to love.

This used to be controversial? Really?!

Another variation on The Dangerous Game, this time with overtures to Punishment Park. However, there is no one to root for, the message is heavy handed at best, and the much ballyhooed violence is fairly timid for today's audiences. Rai... read morelsback and Hussey are both horribly miscast, with Railsback near hilariously so.

The best part is in the extras where some of the cast members don't mind trashing the film.

Fun in a non-thinking kind of way, but don't get your hopes up.

Just what you want from an exploitation film. Violence, nudity and a cracking storyline. This is a mixture of 'The Running Man' and 'Fortress' but much better than either. The film looks great and the acting is acceptable (even if Hussey looks ridiculous as she tries to fire a ma... read morechine gun) and the ending is suitably over the top and features an exploding head. It's australian exploitation, and it's got basically almost everything: A grim futuristic setting (check!) in a prison (check!) with horrifically abusive guards (super check), run by a warden who, along with his rich friends kills prisoners in a game of cat-and-mouse for kicks (... read moreultimate check!). Then let's through in some nudity, a bunch of blood and gore, a fucking wereworlf, and a healthy dose of eyebrow raising dialogue and plot points.

Gave this one a re-watch to get it off the To-Watch Pile, it holds up well due to tall the downright weirdness of the proceedings. I mean, seriously, why the fuck is there a werewolf-ish creature riding shotgun whilst one of the upper-crust types hunts a prisoner? Who the hell ... read morethought of that?

Fun oddball stuff, well worth a rental for the lunacy of it all.

This movie is rated as highly as it is because of the "good" bad movie factor. It's a low budget gore-drenched exploitation fest that possesses few legitimate merits.
