Gaia has been brought to the brink of war by the evil Black Dragon Clan, and, while the nearby nation of Abaharaki wishes to form an alliance with Gaia for their mutual protection, Van is a leader who prefers to act on his own. Hitomi finds herself transported to Gaia, where she becomes a valuable if unlikely ally to Van; as the Black Dragon Clan advances, Van discovers that Hitomi may hold the key to the magical dragon armor of Escaflowne, the weapon that would make Gaia invincible. Escaflowne (also advertised as Escaflowne the Movie: A Girl in Gaia) features Kelly Sheridan as the voice of Hitomi; the voice cast for the American release version also includes Kirby Morrow, Brian Drummond, and Paul Dobson. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I was forced to watch this in college by a roommate whose sole mission was to get me into Anime. He was not very successful. The film is actually kind of interesting but I was cautious from the get-go of such a detailed journey film (that involves nothing less than traveling th... read morerough space and time to a new and magical world) being contained in an hour and half run-time and I was downright furious when it concluded with an all out mecha battle with giant freaking robots. I would like to go on record in saying that I'd rather be kicked in the balls than watch any Mech Anime. Perhaps the series is pretty good, like I said I was mildly enjoying it till the mech showed-up, but it'll be a cold day in hell before I take a shot at an almost 9hr version of this thing.

Loved the ending to the OVA but still enjoyed the film, although Folken killed in the way he was just didn't do it for me...

This is a retelling of the anime of the same name, but is sooooo much better. I ~loved~ the ending.

This movie is an acquired taste since it's a shorter, more cryptic version of the series, Vision of Escaflowne. The character designs have changed somewhat for the movie adaptation. Everyone takes on an older, and in some cases more sinister appearance. The icing on this cake ... read moreis the music; all of it is full of so much excitement and deep-seeded passion. The main storyline remains the same and universal; a high school girl looking for more than the mundane, and that's what keeps this movie from completely alienating everyone.

A highly condensed, almost too fast-paced, rehash of the series...with a storyline that is only moderately similar to the series. If you had to pick only one you could watch, choose the series.
  • January 11, 2008
This movie is definitely better if you've seen the anime series, as you'll "get" the characters a little more quickly, but it's still quite fun to watch on its own. It's very much eye candy.. Oh, and if you *have* watched the anime? The movie is kind of..a loose 'retelling' of th... read moree anime's storyline, just fyi. ;)

Not a bad retelling with beautiful animation, but the story from the TV series was much much better.

It's awsome! I loved it because it kept me etertained all throw the movie I'm working on getting the series because I loved the movie and no one I know has the series so I'm gonna buy it so I can understand it more better and re watch it anytime I want because I can' t get enough... read more of it. It's like all the other anime I watch like Berserk, Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, and Bastard. I love em all and I have my uncle James to thank for bringing me on to these anime. I lvoe Escaflowne and I hope to see more of it in the future.

Now I want to get the series. What fun to have a connection with an entire other world and the ability to travel there! Reminds me a bit of the Inuyasha anime series. It's neat.
  • July 8, 2007
I'm quite impressed with the sheer quality of this film. The art and music just sing; it's more of a somewhat alternate take than what the anime was, but it does so in a way it stands on it's own. Truely one of the best adaptations of its kind I've ever seen.
