Adapted for the Sci-Fi Channel, the two-part miniseries chronicles the journey of a reckless youth who seeks to master the ancient arts and become the most powerful sorcerer Earthsea has ever seen. As Ged (Shawn Ashmore) begins to discover the vast potential of his true powers, he must face great adversity if he is to truly fulfill his destiny and reunite his bitterly divided planet. Facing dragons, love, and eventually death itself, Ged's path to power is as wondrous and alluring as it is deadly. Also starring Isabella Rossellini, Danny Glover, and Kristin Kreuk (of TV's Smallville), this miniseries premiered in late 2004. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

More or less a Young Adults film, or those into The same sort of Magic as that displayed in harry Potter with a little more action. I am told this is based on a book series and that the book series is much better then the film. The Evil One was some of the best special effects ... read moreuntil the last scene. Its quite long almost 3 hrs, and I think it was made for Sci-Fi Channel thought I am not sure of this. Its a good rental, but not a DVD I would go out and buy unless found at a pawn shop for $3.00 or less. 3 Stars is best I can give this one.

Enchanting plot and re-watchable, definately. Interesting animation but unfortunately the dubbing and voice actors let it down considerably. I mean really, is that how they speak? But good none the less.

Well, I haven't read any of the books so I didn't quite know what to expect from this, but when I saw it I can only say I got the same bad shrill as when I saw the Eragon movie. This mini-series is slightly better though, but still suffers from bad writing and cheesy acting, and ... read moresome scenes are like pure rip-offs from Harry Potter. It's still worth a watch though if you're into the fantasy genre. Just don't expect any quality à la Lord of The Rings ;-)

This is one very entertaining movie. I was so involved in the story that I didn't realize until the end that it was just shy of three hours long. The special effects were a little cheesy, but overall watchable. The plot was involved and well thought out with a few surprises along... read more the way. The cast was great and it had a nice happy ending. This will move high up my list of favorite movies in the fantasy genre.

This is an adaptation of one of my favorite fantasy series', and while it's not terrible -- it does get the main gist of things -- it's really not a good adaptation, either. First of all, it tries to sum up the whole trilogy all at once, instead of telling one story at a time, a... read morend it tries to do it all sequentially. There were reasons the author told the story in different pieces at different times. Second, though one of LeGuin's main descriptive elements for the book was that everyone in Earthsea was brown or red-skinned and the only white people were the scary foreigners, the movie is almost all shiny glossy white people.

    Overall, meh.

I had heard that Miyazaki was doing a version of this, and was ecstatic, I can't imagine anyone doing an adaptation of these books better than him. But it turns out he just turned it over to his son, who instead of doing one or all of the books, did some sort of imagined sub-stories set in the space between two of the books. Again, meh. =/

Entertaining adaptation. Almost Harry Potter-ish with the school of magic and a nearly unkillable enemy.

This was a suprisingly good movie.I really enjoyed it.Despite the fact they were working on lower budget than most great fantasies.

This one was of my most favorite fantasy series of all time. I thought the movie was... ok... I reread the stories before watching the movie and I wasn't all that impressed with how the teleplay was written.

This film, well made for tv movie, is a nice blend of LOTR and Harry Potter. I like the cast, and it was excellent for a tv movie.
