drama. Bhiki is a single mother of three living in rural Western India. The mistress of the brutish Vishnu, Bhiki provides for her children by selling fritters under her clandestine lover's abusive protection. Bhiki's eldest daughter Kamli realizes that her only hope of escaping the poverty she grew up in is to receive an education. She may not be the most academically inclined member of the family, though she does have a plan for the future that she's willing to see through. An awkward girl on the edge of puberty, Kamli is shunned by her classmates and singled out for humiliation by her cruel teacher. Though she's lusted after by both the town grocer and the class bully, Kamli only has eyes for Ajay, a kindly blind boy who recently transferred into her class from Mumbai. Kamli can't understand why her mother is pressuring her into ensnaring Ajay in a physical relationship, and when her attempts to do so end in awkwardness, Bhiki steps in to forcibly finish the job that her daughter just failed at, effectively robbing the young girl of her innocence and threatening to destroy the lives of all involved. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
